16v Gearbox given up the ghost

Featured Replies

Hey all, last night my gearbox decided to give up the ghost,

what i need to know is what will be the best gearbox to replace mine with, or is the recommended just to get the original rebuilt, or replaced.

i understand that the 16v has a shorter ratio box, but m curios to know if the is an other box that would fit the bill???

All comments welcome!

polo GT box should sort it, if you cant find a 16v box

does anybody actually know what keeps going in the 16v boxes mine went. and when i dranined the oil i got a thick brass tapered washer come out that was in 3 pieces, but i dont actually know what it does in the gearbox

hmmm mines on the way out making an awful noise at the moment. changed the oil in it while back but it made no difference! does the gt box go straight on? what about a polo/lupo gti box do they fit?

Only differences I've found whilst window shopping have been cable speedometer and remote linkage. GT boxes arn't exactly ten-a-penny,and are mostly ancient. I'm yet to decide on one,as I've not looked at the late 1.6 Golfs yet.

Incidentally, brass is commonly used where a component needs to wear in sacrifice to a neighbouring steel component. Its very 'hard' but breaks/wears against steel - so brass components in gearboxes are certain to be designed to fail instead of the gears. Therefore,I'm going to strip mine and see whats gone. Nothing to loose. I might even make any replacements in steel..
