My Mk2 saloon is 40mm down and I'd like to fit 14" wheels, which would be 6J, ET38. Anyone know if I'll get away with 185/60/14 tyres on that? Thanks

They sound a bit big. I had a 40mm drop (shocks and springs) on a mk2 coupe with the same tyres as that a few years ago and it did scrub quite a bit. I lived with it though.

I'd prob rub standard wheels til I could afford tyres for the 14s.

edit: the width and offest of those wheels won't cause you any more hassle, it's just the tyre size.

185/60 14s are pretty damn big. If you're set on 14" wheels, 175/50 14s would be a good choice.

I had that size on standard suspension on my mk2 and it rubbed, but only over big bumps.

I would go for 185/50's on there instead, should be the same rolling radis as standard

i had rubbing on my mk4 when i fitted my Ps temporarily with them size tyres, and its down 40 too!

on a mk2 it will rub loads and all the time!!!!!

Too big,really. They're MK2 Golf GTi tyres and when i tried one on mine it jacked up the corner - a bit Mad Max. You may just have enough clearance to prevent rubbing on the inside, but the outer front arches are history for sure. Best tyres for 14s on a MK2/F are:

165x55 - for a touch of stretch..

175x50 - very tidy..

175x55 - nearest gearing (+0.6%) and great general handling..

There's also 185x55 and these are getting cheap and popular. They're a bit big on this car though,185 just push that boundary,but they go on without too much aggro. I've had all these tyres sat on my car,at 40mm down,but I've not tested any of them with a drive - and they weren't all at et38 either.

you should be ok with standard suspension on apart from going over speed humps. I'm running 185/55/14's on a 35mm drop without too much trouble on my GT coupe

Thanks everyone. I assume it's axiomatic that lower profile = smaller volume of air inside tyre = harsher ride?

Depends on its relation to the width. A 165x55 contains less air than a 195x50,and is an equally low profile despite the higher sidewall number. The 55 sidewall of a 185x55 is bigger than the 55 sidewall of a 175x55. The ride of the latter may be a little firmer,but with a fraction less fight - the steering would be kinder to the wrists,for sure.

I have 185/60/14 on my mk3 coupe with stock sus and they rub under heavy breaking and over speedbumps. I'm just waiting to get the stock 13's banded then lower it about 60mm
