is this right that they only have one retaining bolt on top of the rear strut? undid the 17mm bolt on both sides of mine today and they exploded on me? surely there should be one bolt to hold em on the car and one for the strut assembley? (i,m a old golf man me!!)

never had a mk3 before and wondering if the last owner/idiot has put the new shocks on right?

There is a nut holding the spring seat onto the shock. The assembly then goes through the body and another nut holds it to the car, with some rubber bushes providing isolation.

Yes only 1 nut on top of the shock. The way to do them is with the wheel removed & the body supported. Put a jack under the trailing to compress the spring. Remove the nut & unwind the jack which will lower the spring & shock. There 1 nut & bolt through the shock @ the bottom in the trailing arm.

kin-ell thought it had been bodge up!! whipped the wheels off undid the 2 17mm bolt to let the beam drop and then undis the tops fukkin bang!!!! had one of them sinking feelings on the first one and braced me-self for the second!!

no that's normal, bit annoying as it makes it all the harder to remove and put back on again. Golfs are much easier!
