20vt conversions

Featured Replies

I'm looking to having a 20vt conversion done to my 6n 16v. I've had a price back from JBS autodesigns and there conversions start at £7000+vat wich i consider a bit steap althought they do make the conversions look like the car came like that from the facotry using all factory wiring etc. is there anywhere decent that does them cheaper?

thanks

mike

Sorry mate i dont think i can really help you, walshc had a 20vt in his polo though, send him a pm and i'm sure he can explain the ins and outs.

7k is a lot of money, but i assume that includes sourcing the engine and box and everything, i guess you get some real piece of mind too having it done professionally.

Oh and by the way, if you're 16v engine is in good nick and you're selling it, i call dibs!!

tbh I've never got round to the idea why its a good idea to spend £7k or anything near there for a conversion, surely its better off gettin a new [not brand new] car with enough power to match any conversion?

but to each their own i suppose.

cheers guys had a look at the phirm website they seem pretty decent gonna get in contact with them soon to see how much its gonna cost

my afh motor might be forsale depending on weather i cba to bring it back to jersey (channel islands) with me after i have had the conversion done i probably will been as it has only done 40,000 miles since new atm so might be worth selling on.

well yes 7k is alot of money but considering id be having a s3 motor or a leon cupra motor with big turbo conversion exhaust airfilter FMIC etc. there is the potential there for 300bhp+ it will cost me in the region of 8-9k but you show me a car for the same money that will go as fast. and u cant put a price on wiping the smile off some smug nice people face after absoultley kaneing him in his porsche. plus my polo was my first car i got it when i was 17 (I'm only 18 now lol) but in just over a year I've spent thousands on it makeing it perfect and mine and i couldnt sell it to someone and just see it getting wrecked so ill just improove on it even more by making it a 300bhp 150mph+ monster

it will cost me in the region of 8-9k but you show me a car for the same money that will go as fast. a

I really think that is the wrong way of looking at it mate

you could EASILY get a faster car for 9K and it would be a hell of a lot better as a car aswell, just not as unique

I've made a u-turn, good point i wish i still had my 1st car

but i still couldnt part with the cash, unless i had a shitload waiting to be spent...

anything jap would do

Supra, Skyline, Evo, impreza

for me, it would be an M3 with a turbo bolted on

wouldnt one of those be much more expensive to own tho?

you could build a nova/corsa c20let (2.0l turbo) for alot less than 9k and that would be faster! i'd say you could buy the car, suspension, brakes, lump etc and have a couple of grand spare!

none of them cars have any class or character. dont get me wrong there good cars but if i was to buy one it would have to be a r34 gtr or a 22B they in my opinion are a bit more special but at the same time are about 20k off my budget. I'm only 18 if i get myself a imprezza or something now what am i gonna have to buy when I'm like 21 to improve on that. ok the polo will be stupidly fast in a straightline but it will never have driveabilty of a scooby syline evo or watever it will torque steer like a idiot, life off oversteer will be just suicide with 300bhp's worth of eninge breaking it will be an animal but will never be as good as a car designed to handle that power wich is why I'm gonna do this and when i do get the 22B that i want ill apreciate it so much more

what about insurance?

The Phirm charge 5k last i heard

There was a guy on ebay who was selling his mk3 with a 20vt lump in the back and rwd, it was running 320bhp i remember.

It had been done properly and the workmanship could not be faulted.

The stats showed that, 0-60 in 3.2 secs and something like 160mph, but he also descirbed the car in a very accurate way that went something along the lines of this:

- If you want a car to go fast in a straight line buy this one, if you want it to handle dont!!!

- This is not the kind of car that you should expect to go razzing it round country lanes in as it will spin out.

This was a bit different as it was rwd but in a way that is beter for the power, as youd get more traction with rwd than you would with front, but you will then encounter the problem of the chassis being so short that the back wants to keep swapping with the front.

My polo shoulg be running 230-240 bhp when it is done and thats with it still being a 1.3, it will be a bit of a joke to drive, i didnt actually want a power figure that high really, as it does bring in reliability issue and driving issues but hell ill still love it!!!

I know someone with a 350bhp ibiza and he cannot drive it unless it is bone dry, why bother spending all that money if it is going to be undrivable.

people will give you respect for doing it but you could still get so much joy out of something else and with it being more drivable.

When i was your age (only 2 years ago mind!) all i wanted was power, I've now realised that its not just power that counts, its the set up as a whole that makes a car stand out from the crowd. You also have to think about the insurance, the insurance will go up to generally the group of the donor car, possibly plus some as well as it isnt a factory option, so it will probably still benefit you more to buy the car the engine came out of anyway.

Hope it goes well whatever you decide to do mate, but dont jump in at the deep end like i did.

Chris

my mate built a nova for 3k and it was roughly 200bhp, using the xe engine( i think it xe but it was the non turbo on).

xe is the non turbo engine! my mates nova runs around 160bhp from just a standard xe lump really good fun

I got a 180BHP Ibiza Cupra for £11995 brand new. 17inch alloys, lowered (a bit!) suspension, air con, front mount intercooler, and AP racing 4 pots all as standard. It even cost less to insure fully comp than my G40 was third party.

My mate got his cupra for 4500, an 01 model, with 17inch wheels, drilled discs, air con and lowered suspension.

He spend 300 on some deep dish brocks, 170 on a full refurb, 350 on mapping, had the arches rolled and is paying 480 to smooth everything and sort the bumper out for an fmic.

It now has 207bhp and handles awesomely!

It has street respect too, it can fit in with any crowd, dubbers or not, whereas a nova cant.

(that insurance thing is crazy though, my g is 1400 fully comp to insure, where the ibiza they wanted 1800 fc. What company you with?)

My modified G40 was about £300 tpft, valued at £2000, up to 150BHP with Brentacre. The Ibiza is about £270 fully comp, valued at £14000 (list price new), with Hastings Direct. It is completely standard though. As soon as you mod the car the normal insurers won't touch it. I've found that places like HIC etc. aren't that cheap for a standard car. I've had quotes less than £200 for a stock G40 but I am the wrong side of 30 and have over 10 years no claims.

aah i see, I'm only 19 you see, and the g isnt exactly standard!haha

Renewal due in sept, another years no claims for me!

try stelth in southam :)

Mk3/MA70 Supra 3.0 24 valve Turbo... Easily pick one up for 1500 quid (I'm selling one for less than that and its MINT) and with a 10mm socket and some washers to shim the wastegate you'd be looking at some pretty incredible budget performance. Cough up 300 quid for a Mongoose exhaust and that's another 30 bhp because the exhaust is so restrictive. They even handle well...

Just my view on this. I'd rather have a driveable car.

Try dubsport mate, they did mine 8-)

JBS want £7k+ for a roll in roll out 150bhp 20vt AFAIK

Mine (AUQ=180BHP + mods=230bhp) came in at around £6k 8-) (cant remember the exact price now :? )

Dont listen to people who say "why dont you just buy a factory fast car" tell them what i did, "if i bought a factory fast car then thats all it will EVER be, just another fast car, how many 1.8 20v Turbo mk4 polo`s do you see?" they sort of see your point then ;)

Obviously polo`s dont handle all that good, but you can change stuff to aid better handling :-D

Good luck with it all mate, you`ll love it  i had a smile on face all the time with mine :-D

well wen i wrang tsr they wanted 2k 2 put 40's on my 1.3 and they said with a bit of headwork it would be about 100bhp. they wanted 4k just 4 a 1.4 lump in it...........they couldnt even put a price on a 20vt or vr e.t.c cus they aint done it b4

The Phirm are the best place to do it tbh its where i got mine done...and they no there stuff there!!!

Dubsport used to do them for 6500+Vat simular to JBS

The Insurance will kill u...i'm 18 and was in a very simular situation to you...if i wanted to insure it off my own back it was gonna cost me 4-5grand, do you really wanna spend best part of 13-14k on something just to blow away smug saxo's????

Get a Golf GTi, or seat Leon/ ibiza or skoda VRS....all run around 150-200bhp...newer..more reliable..much easier to drive..alot cheaper to insure...

You also got to be a SH*T hot driver to keep a 20vt polo on the road...they are totally savage, still get butterfly's in my stomach when i drive in the wet!!!

Good Luck what ever you chose m8!!
