Basically I have bought a new GT and the bonnet needs the paint sorting..

I'm feeling the urge to do a bare metal bonnet..

What can I do to rust proof it? a couple of coats of laqur? (cant spell it!)

Has anyone done this before?

yeah just clear coat it :)

2 - 3 wet coats and it should be fine as long as it doesn't react :)

there was a red mk2 saloon at UD this year with a bare metal boot lid dunno if anyone has a pic but that was heavily laquered and it looked cool as!!

yea mitch has a lupo gti bonnet which is aluminium so its polished and wont rust hehe

Its a MK3 polo GT.. Black.. It's my new car and basically the bonnets paint is shagged.. Its got all polished/chrome inserts (bumper, handles etc) and going to have mirror polished la castalettes. So thought it could be a cool experiment.. I can't mirror polish it as its steel not aluminium. But it might look cool? if not.. I'll jst spray it black!

sounds good but if your respraying it get a cf one as thats nearly black and with a dusting of black will look great in the show seasons as the cf will show through

Reading a test of some chrome effect paint a couple of years ago,and the classic car magazine tried it on a chrome bumper. They said it wasnt chrome but did a fair temporary job. But then they polished it! Due to the high aluminium content,they claimed (the photos didnt do it justice,but there was a dull mirror effect) it took to being polished surprisingly well. Another option would be Ambersil galvanising paint. Spray it on,and the chrome aluminium paint even goes frosty-patterned like galvanising.

Mild steel can come up chrome,though. Get some very fine grades onto a sander,building up to 1200,and it should come up very well - but the smoother it is,the more likely the laquer will struggle to hold.

by the way bud normal laquer will NOT stick to baremetal u will need to use a product called POR -15 www.frost.co.uk sell it and it about £20 a tin but this is the ONLY laquer which sticks to bare metal
