G40 Master cylinder and braking questions

Featured Replies

Hi there,

My G40 conversion up until now has had solid 239s (I know very stupid). As I managed to warp the solid discs I decided it was time to uprate the system.

I went down to GFS credit card at the ready and purchased all the parts for a vented setup, brembo vented discs, refurb VW2 calipers, pagid pads and goodridge hoses and new bolts and some decent new fluid.

Anyways me and my dad have fitted it all today and its gone on very nicely, however until its come to bleeding the system. We have tried bleeding the caliper plugs on all four corners in the order haynes states however we cant seem to get presure, the fluid seems to be coming out of all four plugs clear. Any ideas?

I'm thinking that the seals on the master cylinder may of colapsed or something? It is 15 years old. As I've spent 130 quid so far I might as well just replace it, also if I do which one should I get, I've been told there is a larger master cylinder that can fit? anyone with any part numbers?

you help is much appreciated as my car is on axle stands at the mo and I've got to go to work on wednesday!

Thanks jon

You may as well get the mk2 golf gti 16v master cylinder (22mm?) along with a blanking bolt for one of the 4 outlets.

The Passat has a 3 outlet 22mm master cylinder. Cheaper and easier to find and doesn't need the blanking plug.

hum any part numbers?

i fitted a 22mm master cylinder to my GT and the braking is phenomenal.

you dont need part numbers. nobody makes polo MC's. they sell you a golf one with a blanking plug.

I got mine for £26 from my local motor factors

the passat m/c with only 3 outlets i beleive is a 19mm one (g40 is 17mm and a 4 outlet passat/golf16v etc is 22.2mm)

When I bought a 22mm one they came with blanking plugs anyway. Check it in GSF and they'll have some if it dosent.

Mine came off a 1.6 or 1.8 mk3 Passat and is definately 22mm. Plus it was attached to the larger 9" servo, same as the 16V Golf.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it wasnt the master cylinder in the end anyway, just a shit load of air in the pipes, used a litre of fluid to bleed it!

I upgraded the master cylinder for a new Golf 16v 22.2mm item and blanked off the fourth outlet with a closed allen key plug, might as well as I'm doing the rest i thought.

My setup now is new refurb VW2 calipers, brembo cross drilled discs, pagid fast road pads, goodridge braided hoses, quality 5.1 fluid and a 22.2mm master cylinder, should hopefuly be adequate for the G!

Cheers again

How would you describe the differences in feel using the larger master cylinder?

sorry for brining back an old thread but;

i think my master cylinder may be on the way out (or gone ) and am wanting some improved braking on my mk2 polo. i've currently got a mk1 golf gti (same as g40) disk/caliper setup, and am still using the stock master cylinder.

is the passat 22.2mm a straight swap? I'm not running a servo, i dont have the room to run one either. so would it be ok to run the passat MC (which i assume is paired with a servo on the passat) without a servo?

if so, i'll pop to GSF this afternoon and get the bits i need. (the master cylinder i think i need is part number 65276 BRAKE MASTER CYL-22.2mm PA 4/88 >12/96 on the GSF site)

When I bought a 22mm one they came with blanking plugs anyway. Check it in GSF and they'll have some if it dosent.

would you recommend changing the servo as well or does that not make any difference?

Holy thread recovery. My GT has briaded hoses, EBC Green Pads and 22 m/c.

All you had to do was breathe on the pedal and you would be head butting the windscreen. Took some getting used to but they were mint.

While we are kind of on the topic - SERVOs.

Mine has packed up. ETKA lists 2 servos for the mk3 polo.

a 7"x204 and a smaller 7"x178 for GT/G40/1W

I assume the smaller one is not to over-servo the car? I need all the help I can get so is my best bet the bigger one?

Does GSF stock the different sizes as the £275 price-tag from VAG scares me
