Insurers checking ECU for chip?

Featured Replies

the story goes like this....

I'm really tempted to get my ECU remapped but I dont want to tell my insurer untill the next time I renew it as the poicy I am on at the moment will not allow it. my question is, has anyone got any experiance/knowlege of insurance companys checking an ECU for remapping after accidents in an attempt to get out of paying out? My car has no other mods by the way.

its unlikely they would bother, but do it at your own risk and dont blame me if you get your fingers burnt! insurers tend to be more worried with high value cars not old bangers i.e. cars worth less than £1500 cos they could spend that kinda cash investigating, which if the car was worth 15k say and they got out of paying out, would be worth it.

And people wonder why insurance is so high

insurance is high because insurance companies encourage people to claim for injuries they dont even have i.e. whiplash. people just seem to be money grabbing gits these days. people doing dodgy stuff like not declaring mods isnt pushing insurance up cos the insurance company doesnt pay out!

I don't think the chip/remap will make a huge difference anyway, though i may be wrong, unless you have an induction kit and also an uprated exhaust. The idea is that it tells the engine how to react to the increased airflow through it, and so i think tbh there isnt much point in it.

Feel free to shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong though.

So if he hit me and his insureance would not pay out because he invalidated it. Who would pay for the repairs on my car? Answer My insureance, and whos Insureance would go up? Answer ME

Fair enough, I was just wondering how easy it is for them to tell and how likley they are to check in the event of an accident? tbh, i probably will wait till my insuance runs out this year and then go through adrian flux or someone that is mod friendly when i have my four years no claims.

The idea would be to gradually add a 4 branch manifold, induction, and possibly a decent (quieter) stainless seel exhaust but I'm not, not going to tell my insurance company about those, if that makes any sence?

it would just be the universal Fahrvergnugen tuning chip for the 6n16v first, as it says that on its own it would give most difference in performance compared to an exhaust or induction. I dont expect miracles just a bit of extra poke would be nice.

aint life a bitch. its happened to me twice, first one the guy payed for the damage (which cost him more than it would have to actually have insurance) and the second i had to pay for myself. if someone decides not to declare something theres very little you can do about it.

Except for write there car off with a sledge hammer and laugh with the insurance doesn't pay out

If your insurance won't insure you on a mod there is a reason. Its like when your mum wouldn't let you hang out with the bad kids at school, there was a very good reason, but you just didn't understand fully. You grow up and see them and they are still tramps and you thank your mother for steering you in the right direction.

In this instance testicals is your hypothetical mum.

 ^^very true....Insurance companies work on credit, at the end of the financial year they make the payouts official....If someone hit you insured with Directline, and your insured by Elephant. Directline pay on credit elephant, who pay you. No money what so ever is excahnged between parties....So if your an un-insured, and an insured driver is hit, then the insured party will get the money from his insurance company. Its better to insure your modifications then your not losing out if someone hits you, or vice versa, that way your safe and sound. I really do think that insurance comanies need to fix up about who they are insuring and at what risk, They should take more information about the driver and their car's.

If he hit you his insurance company/the motor insurance bureau by law MUST cover all costs to you. They then have to hunt down the guy who hit you for the money if its invalidated. Invalidated insurance is not the same as no insurance as 3rd parties are still paid out.

Theres quite often no reason whatsoever. One of my mates isnt allowed alloy wheels on his policy. Standard size alloy wheels, no performance difference and hes insured TPO so the theft likelyhood should be irrelevant. There is no reason for that.

Another lad I know had his insurance company have a fit for fitting a sunroof. They are mostly just money grabbing wankers who dont understand statistics properly. Hence why if you are a student you get a premium hike and being young you get a premium hike, despite the fact that 99% of students are young so they should have taken that into account. On the day I graduate I go from a high risk to very low risk despite the fact that i am the same person. Its bullshit.

Thats like the thing that if you are under 25 you are a high risk but over 25 you are a low risk, why is that?

On your 25th birthday do you suddenly get presented with better driving talent or something?

No, but they have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. Likewise, in general the average student's lifestyle is very different to the average graduate employee's lifestyle - hence the difference in insurance pricing. It might not seem fair, but there is a reason - they're the ones with the insurance stats, not us.
