Hey Guys,

Been havin a few problems today....been trying to change the oil and oil filter on my car as part of its service. But I seem to of stumbled at the first hurdel!! The sump plug & washer! I cant get the bloody thing un done in order to drain the oil! Iv tried brut force, iv tried giving it a spray with WD40 and iv even tried banging my socket wrench witha hammer but stil no movement....

Does anyone have any genius ideas to help solve my problem?

put a long bit of scaffold tube (or similar sort of beafy pipe)over your wrench gives you an increased bending moment i.e you can exert more torque on the nut and it will undo!

Buzz gun. If you don't have access to one, use a hex (none of that twin star tat) socket on a bar and give it a swift kick, rather than gradually exertting force.

I done one by jacking the car up a bit, putting the wrench on so it touched the ground then gently lowering the car. Worked perfect!!

(Right way round - make sure it'll loosen, not tighten!!!!!!)

Also, probably a blond comment here, but obv Iv jacked a car up before but Iv just bought some axle stands and iv looked in the hanyes manaul but its not very help full, were bouts under the car should I place them to hold the car up when I take the jack away??

Never work under a car supported on axle stands. Fine for sitting next to it doing brakes/suspension, but do not work underneath it.

A pair of inspection ramps are a far safer option.

Iv got ramps but the front bumper gets in the way when drivin up?

to stop the bumper getting in the way jack the car up place the ramps under the wheels and lower the car onto them. (make sure the other set of wheels have a stop behind them and hand brake is firmily applied (i also like to leave in gear if poss to stop the chance of the car rolling back)

In my case (whilst i had my clios) i had to drive onto blocks of wood to get the car high enought to get a jack under it and then do as above. lol

ok went on holiday for a month so didnt change the oil in the end, but started again today...have managed to remove the bolt and have drained the oil. Now I'm just trying to change the filter... I dont have a removal tool & its too late to go and buy on at this stage of the weekend/bankholiday...

does anyone have any tips on how to help free up the filter so I can take it off and put the new one on before refilling with oil?
