got myself a 1.3 cl squareback

I've been told that the best way to go about it is upgradin the carb

now i know very little about VW's.. but willing to learn :)... so are any of the golf gti's carb'd?

and if so should i use one?.. and if not where can i get a better carb from?

also will it work better if it is mated up to a decent cam set up?

no golf gti's are carbed. standard anyway! i used to have a 1.8 mk1 golf cabby that ran a webber replacement carb. more power, better reliability, better mpg. you can maybe still get them for 1.3? not sure

Yeah,the 'i' in 'GTi' stands for 'injection'..

One upgrade would be the Pierburg 2E3 unless its already fitted - which i think it is. Its a twin choke item. Not great,though. Realise though,that if there was a GTi carb,it wouldnt be very good,because it'd overfuel your smaller engine. The job of a carb is to distribute the correct amount of fuel and air into the engine. Too much fuel wont burn - as it stops burning once the all the oxygen is used up. So you're looking for a more efficient carb. Some have had fair results from a Weber - Danny Lee would be the man to speak to about this. Its covered somewhere in this forum,though. Or two sidedraught carbs - though twin Webers are very expensive (Effective,though). The problem with one carb is that its 'single point' fuelling - pouring fuel into a manifold which then gets snatched from one direction to another. Use a 'multipoint' setup and the same amount of fuel is distributed more efficiently - directly into each cylinder. Plus more airflow. This means putting a very small,but advanced,performance carb on each cylinder. This is what sports-bike manufacturers were doing up to about five years ago. I've explained the fitting of bike carbs elsewhere in the forum (the quad-carbs on my 1.6 are from a Honda Fireblade). They're your carb options,really.

Incidentally,a GT cam is said to improve things on that engine,aswell.
