Polo Mk3 MAJOR Service

Featured Replies

Basically I'm of to uni in Sept so want to MAJORLY service my car so I should have years of carefree motoring (engine-wise anyway.) Anything that is easily changed is going to be done.. so oil, plugs etc, incl. senders..

I'm planning on:

Oil

Oil filter

Spark Plugs - Which do you reccommend?

HT leads

Dizzy cap

Rotor Arm

Cambelt

Rockercover gasket

Blue temp sender

Fuel Filter

Fuel Pump Relay

Right.. anything else I should be looking at? Lambada sensors maybe? I've heard of a throttle postition valve or something?

EDIT: Its a Polo GT

no point replacing stuff that's working fine in my opinion. Everything you say is OK but the fuel pump relay seems kind of pointless, if it isn't broke why fix it?

Spark plugs, use the Bosch ones - W5DTC or something like that the GSF or ECP sites will bring up the right ones.

Rockercover gasket

Blue temp sender

Fuel Pump Relay

As hayesey says, if the above are still doing their job (along with the lambda etc), then save yourself the time and money and leave them be. Should any of them fail when at uni, then they could be fixed quickly and easily with minimal tools.

Other things which I thought of, which are more 'jobs' than items:

  • Air filter
  • Brake fluid (depending upon when it was last done, should be every 2 years)
  • Coolant (same as above)
  • Strip, check and clean front brakes
  • Strip, check and clean rear drums
  • Check/ adjust handbrake
  • Check exhaust for rust, and check/ renew the rubber hangers
  • Check and adjust alternator drive belt

That’s all I can think of, but even after this kind of major service, you can almost guarantee it'll be the most random and unexpected things which will immobalise your car when you're away at uni!

maybe a water pump if its the orig one and its done lots of miles....if it siezes then the cambelt comes off

Spark Plugs - Bosch W6 DTC only avilable from VW at the moment. Or I think you can get Beru equivalent from ECP.

I would bother doing the sensors or relays unless they are gone. Probably best to do the alternator belt while you do the timing belt. Also rebew the coolant / flush the system if needed and check or replace the gear oil. Do the brakes as mentioned above also make sure the pipes are corrosion free and the flexis are fine.

And if the cambelt's coming off to do a new waterpump, stick a new one on.

Sounds good.. The fuel pump relay was broke so needed relacing... Brakes I completley forgot about!! Coolent is a must too.. I was aking about sensors as my car is kangarooing so thought might as well change them as it could be one of those and i'm not sure what sensors there are to change!

Are Bosch super 4's better then the W6/5 DTC's?

Check the wheel bearings to, especially the rears.
