head gasket

Featured Replies

well just finished my H/G today the head was off for about 2 weeks as waiting for the money to buy another gasket.

came with head bolts but couldnt use the head bolts as the fooking tool to undo the old ones didnt quite fit the new ones unless you hammered the tool into the head bolt. but then you couldnt get the bloody tool out.

so reluctantly used the old bolts. checked the timing was ok turned over by hand

And started on the button but with a tappety sound sounds like its now got a noisy tappet.

Spoke to my friends friend a mechanic and he said that its not the gasket that has come out of alignment but your tappet happens to some ford CVH engines apparently so he said to drive it 20-30 miles get it hot and see it the tappy noise goes .

so will be driving it tomorrow to see if its ok he said new oil and filter and engine flush would deffo help aswell.

but funds dont allow for this yet. boo. the only difficult bolt to undo was the 10mm water pump bolt had to undo front engine mount jack engine up to get clearence but managed it.

did some minor porting to the inlet and exhaust manifold whilst it was off.

So fingers crossed its just the tappet. the gasket did seem to align up with all the holes

Anyone else had similar problems oh its a mk3 GT by the way

I recently changed a HG, not on a GT - mines a 1.05 mk3.

One tappet was pretty noisy for a few days, but it's fine now. :-D

BTW what is 'porting'?

Yep same thing happend to me after a HG change, got the car back it was make a tappety noise, and the mechanic said to drive it and try to drive it more aggresively(sp) and after a few drives, it was better.

porting is when you remove the excess material inside components such as inlet manifolds making it more ifficient to allow more fuel and air to enter the cylinder head. also the cylinder head can also be ported and polished to basiclally alloy more fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber thus making more power

You can also do this on the exhaust manifold removing any rough surfaces making it smooth as possible .

But where the inlet manifold ic concerend you can port (open enlarge remove any mass produced excess material) evenly in each of the inlet holes. but not too smooth to alow a slightly rough surface to allow turbulance of the air and fuel to enter the cylinder head.

Exhaust manifold smooth as poss to allow the most efficiant exit of zorst gasses other than buying an after market zorst.

So basically if you have the knowledge and time and tools i used a dremmel not the best tool but does the job.

it makes the best of what you got whithout spending quite a lot of money on buying ported inlets which are very good and worth wile but all depends on your budget really.

Did this on my mk2 coupe s running a GT on twin choke weber ported out inlet and exhaust deffo made a noticable difference.

Hope this helps. cheers Jay

....Hope this helps. cheers Jay

hmm, may give that a go on my exhaust manifold :D
