i reckon thats a 16v out of an ibiza and i always thought one of them would fit easily enough because the shells are so similar!

the engine bay of the ibiza is more like the one in a mk2 golf. The best starting point is the ibiza 2.0 16v engine but it's by no means a bolt-in conversion. As you can see, it's possible, but then so is pretty much anything with enough time and money.

cheers guys

i just want something different to the 20v route, i know it aint as powerful but i kinda like the idea of a 2.0 16v I've heard they can make about 170bhp with few right mods

1.6 16v Polo GTi engine bored out to 1.7+, Shrick cams and ITBs.

That's what I'd do.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds tasty,

bet that costs around £3k+ though

do you reckon a 2.0 16v could be bought and fitted for around a grand?

na, if you can get the golf style subframe into your polo, then you have all the engine choice across the vw range

20v, r32, r36, abf, 9a, v5 whatever you want

Of those engines I think I'd go for the V5...

as simple as that eh Flux

thats the last one id have personally...

My friend has the abf from the ibiza in his mk2 golf and its silly quick its 160bhp just with a decat and what takes the piss even more is that its an insrance group 10 well the engine the car came from, this then makes it the same as the mk4 16v polo grrr

sweet, its silly how the ins group on the valvers is 10, its far too high

well pretty much, because the engine and box all bolt onto the subframe, yeah you would need to have a front mount as well, but you would re-enforce the front cross member and put the mount onto that

and wiring, go after market, you only have the engine loom to sort out then

i am going to stick my neck out and say that there are so many mk2 golfs with vr's, 20v's because they have subframes, and pretty much all the vw engines bolt straight onto them

and in my eyes the hardest thing to do would be the exhaust downpipe lol

of those i'd have the r32 first, on ITBs

an ABF on throttle bodies and a couple of other simple mods (not saying ITBs are simple) can make 210bhp, a mate had a ITB'd ABF in his cordoba and it soudned immense and went like poo off a shovel

the engine in the pic is an ABF

and yeh the exhaust manifold is a bitch on the ABF (2.0 16v), and ADL (1.8 16v) lumps because it come out in front of the bulkhead, you cant get stainless manifolds for the RHD cars with ABF or ADL lumps

Edited by DubGarry

thats not what i mean about the exhaust being the hardest

its the hardest for me because i dont know anyone with a pipe bender, so you will have to order a bunch of bends and chop and weld them up yourselves

and you can get stainless manifolds for both the abf not sure what the adl is, kr's, 9a's, you can get stainless manifolds for

Fair enough. What's wrong with them? I'm guessing they weigh less than a VR6, not much more than the 4 cylinders, probably less than the turbos, sound better than the 4s and just as good as the VR6.

Are they unreliable or untuneable? Or is just personal preference?

IIRC they're heavily weighted so that they run well...being 5 cylinders it is not a very balanced engine so the crank weights and/or flywheel will be pretty chunky to dampen out vibrations
