Petrol fumes

Featured Replies

Ok so for a few months i have this strange intermitent petrol smell, seems to do it when i have more then £10 in the tank but not so much if theres any less then that. I had the car on some small ramps today with the engine running but yes you guessed it, not petrol fumes :x I have checked as much of the piping and connections as possible without removing the tank. Checked under the hatch & it's all dry under there. Have also checked the TB connections but the smell comes from the tank area (back of the car). Was going to take the tank out today but then it started f-ing raining :smoke:

Slight rant. :paranoid:

Any help would be appriciated, going down Newquay this week and wan't to try & sort it.

Thanks

Could be from the filler cap? Or a broken breather hose maybe?

If not obvious it could be a hole in the filler neck or top of tank so you may need a new tank. I fixed mine with epoxy resin but it's only a matter of time before I need a new one...

Can you tell me abit about the breather pipes mate, i realise mine go up into the body..? If a breather pipe was blocked were would the petrol exit?

Well if it was blocked the fumes wouldnt be able to escape from the tank or air allowed in to replace used fuel... could be split though, explaining the smell.

Not 100% but on a Mk3 the breather pipes run to the front of the car as part of the charcoal system thingy, I can't say where tho as I've never owned a mk3!

cheers mate, i think it must be a breather pipe or something. I will inspect.

Thanks again.

mine does this too but as you said, only with £10+ of fuel in the tank. Would be interested to know what it is as it gives my missus a headache!!!

Theres a breather pipe runs inside the car.Its behind the drivers side rear trim panel. This pipe may have split or come off
