Right i put car back together with new everything and it has this really prominent knocking noise...

Now straight away to me i think its the top mounts, I've looked and that odd nut screw thing that holds the top mount down, is quite high up, compared to the gt i have, so therefore the caps that hold the strutts up, they just sit loose on top, up in air, i hope i have made sense...

So when driving, big bumps not so noticeable, but litte ones, odd ones on just one side, its a real foot feeling rattle through car, and the best example is if driving down a steady hill, you can tap the brakes on and off and it does the said rattle, asif the brake calipers are loose

on and off kerdonk kerdonk

its a really big rattle, feel it badly...

I've examined and cant see anything obvious, also i noticed on accelorating round left hand corners, there is a rhythmical taping/klunking...

the handling is like shit too, but i put that down to the tracking not been done yet...

19mm or 17mm on the end of the anti roll bar through the bottom arm. both sides

yeah i checked these they both tight, think bushes might be worn, it definatley seems to be coming from the top, its frickin odd!

Check the exhaust is not banging on the tunnel brace near/after the cat (That is if you have put it back on)

well would you believe it it is the top mount, drivers side is loose as, think a rogue knackered one has made it into my parts list...

well i took it out and it felt tighter, but still the knocking continued, got my mate at garage to take it out, he was like wtf

said it was the track control arms, i had checked them, they seemed fine, i then walked next to car as he stamped brake, wheel moved forwards and backwards like a bastard, so jacked up and got crow bar type tool under the strutt and leverd it up and down, the ball joint on end had really bad up and down movement

so gunna get some replacements and hopefully fix problem!

Getting new G40 specific ones from VW? If so please let me know roughly how much they are. Thinking of getting some myself soon.

is it the inner rose joint? you can actually change the joint seperately on most of them, retained by a circlip which means you dont ave to spend £80 a piece on TCAs. you can buy rose joints by size from most bearing suppliers and motorsport stockists

my mate with discount quoted £69 for them, sounds shite to me, i dont even think id pay £50 for one, and more i look at things, i cant see how the g40 different ones can make that much difference, i know they do, but how much difference are we talkin here really....

There is not much difference when using new items - but over time - that is when the cheap ones show why they are cheap as the rubber bushes fatigue a lot quicker than rose joins especially when we don't exactly give the "drive by wire" front end on mk3's forgiving driving...

If VW put them there - that is enough to say they even thought about this problem - but decided on this rather than redesigning the chassis to take more power - and as we notice on the Mk4 - they now use a wishbone!

I think the g-laderseite ones are a bit cheaper than VAG - but they also appear a bit too race spec for everyday use imo...

Keeping things tight for as long as possible is ideal - perhaps you could buy 3 standard ones for one specific G40 one - but my G40 ones have only just done a ball joint gaitor after 140K and still I only replaced the one that was gone due to lack of funding for preventative maintainence at the moment.
