Is it normal for your steering wheel to rock from side to side this much?

Thats not normal lol. I would pop the horn bit off and see if the bolt is loose, I'm guessing that it might something abit further down the rack though.

Yeah, I think so, the whole steering column cover moves with it! How is the steering column secured to the chassis? I used to have an ax - it had a simple bracket and two bolts which sometimes came loose and gave the same effect.

Anybody know about the steering column?? I've had the shroud off but I couldn't see where it was attached.......

Off the top of my head - there is a large pressed steel brace,that is a part of the bodyshell,spot welded to the bulkhead. Removing the instrument cluster will reveal this. The column is attached to that in some bolt-stylee way,but I've never removed one and so can only advise you get your tools out and have a good poke around

Ha ha! My trouble is I prefer talking about work to actually doing it!!

Can anybody tell me what the prongs look like on the tool for removing the instrument panel? Maybe I can make one from a wire coathanger?

My uber-Pikey method involved brute force pulling the sides of the fascia apart and sticking a knife in one side to pull the clocks out... Otherwise I used a set of radio pins when changing the clocks on my mates car. They just need a bit of wiggling about. They are the realy simple wire pins though, so a coathanger would probably do!

Take the stalk/ignition barrel shroud off the column, and look for an allen bolt on the underside. It's head faces the drivers door sill (IIRC). Have look and see if that's tight. Mine was loose and the column, including the indicators stalks etc would move up and down by a few mill, although I can't remember it rocking from side to side though. It's not uncommon for these to work loose.
