ok I've bet you've heard this on a hundred times before the dreaded mk2 polo brakes. I've tried the search tool on the forum but got confused.... so thought id ask.

go easy on me I'm only 16 will be 17 next month grandad gave me the car as my 1st its quite cool as I'm really into the VW scene so thats cool i can pretty much make anything do anything do many things are possible.

I'm looking for any links, write ups, step by step guides on how to upgrade the brakes on my mk2 polo been told i can use g40 stuff... but was wondering about adding a brake servo to thE system? heard u can stick a golf servo in there to help? its all just stuff I've been told so if you guys can help me it would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum mate.

Adding a servo isn't that easy, in fact it's near impossible on a RHD car, you'd need to get a linkage going over to the other side of the car etc etc.

The brakes aren't as bad as you'd think on the lower powered versions, you'll still lock the wheels up in the dry which means the limiting factor is the tyres, not the brakes themselves. Non-servo assisted Mk2s just mean you need to push the pedal fookin hard.

And yeah, a pair of G40 calipers along with the vented discs (and pads to suit) will help stop your car quicker when you're driving hard.

The changeover on revised front brakes was around 1984 IIRC. Before this, they have small pads (like a Mk1), afterwards, the calipers accept a bigger pad. It's a straight swap to change the calipers from early to late Mk2 style.

G40/Golf front discs and calipers are a common mod. This allows you to fit a vented disc, which won't suffer from heat fade as badly as the solid polo discs. Worthwhile for track use, probably not so much for road use (unless you're driving in a style that means you have to brake hard and often, which probably indicates you're doing something wrong).

Mk2 brakes are heavy because they don't have a servo (this doesn't mean they work less well than Mk3 brakes, you just use them differently). If you want your brakes to feel lighter, you need a servo. A mk3 setup can not be made to fit a RHD polo. The only way I've seen a servo added is by using a remote servo kit for a mini, these aren't very common.

The rear drum brakes remained pretty much unchanged over the Mk1, 2 and 3, even on the G40. I've seen rear disc conversions done, but I'd question if this is really worthwhile, or just aesthetic. I'd also have my reservations about getting the front to rear bias of the brakes right (too much braking at the back means the back wheels locking up and sliding, while the front wheels are stopping fine, too little means you won't stop as well as you could).

would it be possible to make a servo fit by re makeing the bulkhead?

i forgot to say i can do almost anything.

does cutting a hole in the bulkhead and rebuilding it count?

my dads built competition 4 wheel drive cars.

and just for refferance I'm currently building this everything hand made by me nothings bolt on because basically you can only get it in the state's

I know a lot of people think its more work than its worth, but I have fitted the bulkhead section c/w servo, m/c and pedal box from a mk3 Polo into my mk2.

IMO, its the only way of doing a proper servo conversion to get a lighter pedal action.

It was a lot of work to do it properly and to make it look factory which was my intention all along.

I've yet to paint my engine bay, but once its done the bulkhead area should look OE.

If you and your Dad are good at making things, it really shouldn't be much problem.

yea making stuff really isnt a problem because we have our own little work shop ect. might just do the G40 upgrade for now and c how it is but defo considering a servo brake system.

What motor are you planning to put in the SJ mate? I've got a 16v Vitara lump sitting in my garage doing nothing...

hey, whats teh whole set up on the sj? are they landy axles or danas?

land rover choclate axles i hear u say who wanst them there worse than standard suzuki units which arnt that bad dana's in this country cost to much there toyota land cruiser fj70's well stronger than any land rover axle the shafts are massive.

its got a 4 link coil rear suspnesion set up. with nice soft flexy mk1 golf rear springs my suzuki evan has VW on it so it half beolngs here. haha

and a 2 link coil'd front

the suspension travel is massive!

if theres enought demand i can start a thread in anotehr part of the forum? under members cars?

also running various things like toyota PAS box and them are 35 inch simex tyres.

YES start a build somewhere I'm very intrested and sure alot of others will be.

nothing wrong with landy axles dads got a stage 1 v8 that he has rebuilt and offroaded twice and from what we can tell

the exles are great, some pics of dads V8

its got stange 1 heads, twin su's, sdi cam, hi comp pistons, and BIG air intakes alog with electro ignition and other stuff its producing 180 ish bhp and its only a 3.5

landie axles are alright just toyota ones are better and v8s umm dad used to competition race land rover's for 25 years or so....
