Using Mk2 golf gti brakes on a Mk3 polo

Featured Replies

I hear you can replace the front brakes (Solid front brake discs, Pads and Callipers)from a golf mk2 gti onto a polo mk3.

Or do i need to just replace the callipers

i also hear if u replace the master cylinder with a passat one (of the same age) its 22mm so bigger, so better stopping power

I'm a newbie to this forum and car mechanics.

CAN iT bE donE :)

Cheers

you can put 239mm vented discs onto your polo using the calipers from a mk2 golf yes. But not the bigger 256mm discs (for that you need to source much more rare old audi parts).

the bigger master cylinder reduces pedal travel.

Not Golf GTi calipers - normal Golf calipers. The ones you need have VWII stamped into the casting, the size of a pound coin,on the outside of the caliper. They can be found on many common VW's in breakers, such as some 80's Golfs and some 90's Golfs and Polos. The vented 239mm discs you need to use with them were fitted to 8v Golf GTi's until the late 80s,so thats probably where you got that idea from. And you need to use G40 pads, which are cheaper than you'd expect.

so do the mk2 Golf calipers fit straight on as long as they are for the VWII type for vented discs?

i was told id have to find mk1 Golf/Scirocco calipers

The mk2 Golf carrier doesn't fit as the bolt holes are further apart. The caliper fits onto your existing (Polo) carrier.

The carrier is part no. 2 in this picture, the caliper is part no. 10.

You can also fit the discs onto the rear if you're that bothered, though i don't know from personal experience how much difference it makes to stopping power. Ask Yeha about that one hehe... The mans a genius!

so to clarify..

Mk2 golf (VWII) calipers

mk3 Polo carriers

Mk2 Golf/Polo G40 239mm vented discs

G40 Pads

that sound about right?

Yep. I got my VWII's from a MK3 Golf with solid discs, and the yard also had a pair on a late 6n Polo with vented discs (the seals were damaged tho),so you dont have to limit yourself to finding a MK2 Golf - just look for the tag.
