I finally got round to putting some 16inch ACT's on the Polo (pic's to follow). Tyres are 205/45/16 I've noticed that there isn't alot of space between the the wheels and shocks (just over an inch) can't really afford new tyres right now so wondered if it would be wise to get some 5mm spacers all round. I have no rubbing issues and do not catch on full lock but just feel paranoid.

Any advise welcome

how far is it from the arch?

5mm spacers may push the wheels to far to the outside

lower profile tyres may help, I'm having to fit 5mm spacers to clear my g60 calipers at the moment, but there is sufficient room in the arches anyway...

check out the outer lip of the arch, you should be able to ascertain how far you can bring the wheels out.

my coilies and last wheels only had about 4mm clearance between the too, had no problems until the wheel bearing went as it caused the wheel to rock some mad camber and the tyre inner lip got fully murked by the coilie collar!!!
