I have standard speakers in the dash and doors of my 6N 16v and I'm thinking of upgrading them as they're sounding a bit tired. Not going for comps, just want to replace the existing 6.5" and 4" speakers behind the grilles. I've got a Kenwood KDC 5090B CD player in the car (47w x 4) can anyone suggest what speakers (and more importantly what wattage) I could put behind the grilles to make the most of what I've got?

you could jus leave the tweeters and change the mid only for a better speaker...

or do it properly and replace all of it with some comps but then theyd probably need an amp and u dont want to do that i take it

Well, no, it's not that - I suppose I'm just trying to make it as straightforward as possible.

I thought it was a 4" speaker in the dash - I had a search around this forum and that's the advice I found. I would like to try and replace them if poss as they are sounding the worst out of all the speakers.

What would be considered a better speaker for the 6.5's? I'm open to suggestions.

Nop dash speakers are 100% NOT 4"

well if the dash bits the worst than thats probably because its the most basic tweeter VW could find for cheap...

to replace them and the door speaker you will need components...look around for some with a very low nominal power rating if you want to run them from a headunit

mine were ok runnin from my 4x60max unit (as i tried em for a few days)...but with them wanting 90w rms they sound ten times better off of an amp
