Generally a 239mm setup of a mk1 GTI or G40 does the trick. Dunno what discs are best but most people strongly recommend the Raicam pads. May want to put some braided hoses on while your on with it, but thats upto you really.

It should be a straight swap putting the G40/GTI stuff on.

are the disks on the g40 vented. i was looking down the line off g40 parts but other people had said problems would happen with fitting. would it be best bet to by the whole unit i.e pads shoe and disk brand new

There shouldn't be any problems, should just go straight on as far as I'm aware.

The discs are vented.

Generally the best places to look are on the VW forums, ebay and scrapyards. I've just sold a set of G40 brakes as well!
