I'm not very car technical minded so excuse my speke, just looking for some advise really............

polo broke down about a month ago, took dealer ages to find fault have had new control unit, cylinder head and coils and software uodated.

now the car is running lumpy when idle, running at 800 revs or summit like that and is lumpy and juddery, vibrating only when idle eg traffic lights, jams etc....

car been back in garage this week and had extensive road tests and investigations and nowt to be found, they are saying that this is quite common for 3 cylinder polos, my question is tho, why is it only started happening since the breakdown, has run really smoothly lst 9 months, love it and nether noticed a prob?

so if you can understand this ramble is this summit you experience too?

What year and engine is the car?

IF its a gt youl be looking forever more lol

mines being lumpy on idle since i got it still cant solve it

mines has the exact same problem, i have never been able to sort it out

me three...

i have a high lift cam which doesn't help

and there is a little bolt thing that holds the throttle open a little...

a fuked with it and now it idles high and the revs drops slow..

and my car will NEVER idle when its cold no matter how high i turn it up..

I'm thinkin throttle valve potentimeter (however you spell it)

I had this problem on a 90 polo GT which i still own. It ran lumpy, would stall or cut out at odd moments and idled at what i would consider to be an irratic manner.

To cut a long story short and to save you guys pain the problem most likely will be a small rubber diaphram (sorry about the spelling) in the carburetta - which has a small dip like appendage attached to it. This part developes micro-pores over time as it ages. Which lets in air to the flow and causes the bad running or odd idle.

This happened to my polo gt - it was like that for a long time untill i eventually found a mechanic who knew the ins and outs of the polo like no ones business. He changed the part - it cost about 6 euros -

for the part.

So although this may not be the solution for some of you- i know that this is the cause of the problem i had and you guys are describing exactly the same symtoms.....

So dont go wasting time on valve tuning -timing - etc- check and see if replacing the rubber diaphram in the carb will cure the probs-

Lastly when this long annoying and tiny part was replaced the car ran like a dream and got the zip back in its stride- since then i have had absolutly no bad running - stalls - poor idles- cold starts etc. The best few bucks i ever spent on a car.

3 cylinder polos???

3 cylinder polo are the newer ones.

eg 1.2 9n etc

GT Val is from europe (assuming this as he uses euros), and iirc GT was a spec level in some countries not the type of engine.

so he may well have a GT with a carb

to be honest thats about as good as I get.

Only know about the newer 3 cylinder cars as a kid at my sixth form used to have them and think they were fast.

He lost a thumb climbing over a fence. Whenever I got the usual 'your cars a banger etc' I used to reply with - Your missing a thumb and a cylinder, now fuck off'
