Performance Improvements

Featured Replies

I have a mk 4 1.4 8v Polio. and as some of you know they arnt the quickest,

i was wondering what engine parts were out there that will increase accelaration etc. ( i dont want to spend shit loads like whole engine conversion lol)

I have sports exhaust system and induction kit, (dosent make that much difference)

i was thinking of a stainless manifold but as i no shit all bout engines thats where my ideas stop lol

any help greatly appreciated.

thanks

You could get a 1600 crank shaft fitted IIRC...

That would increase the stroke to make it a 1600 8v iirc...

Although a chip or remap may be required - not 100% sure....

I would save for a quicker model polo like the GTI or buy a car with more power as there is a stage when you just cannot go any further and need to buy another car anyway!

bolt a 1.6 head on. bigger bore = more petrol miore air more umph.

stainless manifold as you say errrr... straight through exhaust (loud and juicy but ashould yield results i think)

mapping as has been said.

apparently you can get a G60 throttle body on there bu i unno aboot that.

What difference will a 1.6 head make? It won't change the capacity of the engine...

iirc the 1.4 8v and 1.6 8v heads are the same

the 1.4 and 1.6 both have the same engine block and they have the same bore size too but you cant just use a 1600 crank, you would need the pistons and conrods too, so basically the whole engine

The 1.6 has a deep-seat compression chamber, and iirc the 1.4 doesnt - so converting the head alone would lower the compression and reduce performance. Valve sizes should be the same.

The block's bore size is the same,so Dave's thinking (1.6 crank would take it to 1.6 litres) makes sense, combined with Skodaboy rightly pointing out that this'd require the rods and pistons aswell, which all together would require a full stripdown to fit - and yes,a built-engine swap would be far easier. And no more expensive with the need for a new head aswell. Plus the 1.6 crank may not fit in the 1.4 block anyway - the 1.6 block had to be considerably stretched to accomodate it - to the point where the con-rods swing just a few mm from the starter motor.

A sorted 1.4 can run 100bhp though, but induction, fuelling and camshaft profile will need adjustments for this.

no, the 1.4 and 1.6 haveexactly the same block and the cranks are interchangable

here's a pic of one paintedblock.jpg

you are right about the heads, iirc it's only the AEX engine that has the same shape combustion chamber as the 1.6 engine, the other's have a flat counterbored surface
