Quick answer needed

K, whenever I go over bumpy bits I get a pretty large knocking coming from the front of the car, so I thought it would be the dampers moving in the struts but I've just whipped a front one off and it seems that its not that as I can't move the damper at all whilst its in the strut i.e wiggle it around.

Could it still be this?

OR...

What else could it be??

Wanna solve this whilst the front is up in the air.lol

Top mounts?

Don't think its the top mounts, they are all tight and as should be.

How old are the dampers?

How old are the dampers?

fairly new, about 5 months or so.

They are not overly bouncy either.

Is the car standard height? If it's considerably low perhaps you have driveshaft/steering arms hitting things?

antirollbar bushes??

Its 40mm lower, its not the driveshaft or anything hitting things, have checked that out.

Have been thinking it could be the caliper moving and knocking as it seems that way.

when does it make the noise? with forward/reverse motion or when your going over bumps??

are your dampers uprated? have you checked the strut top caps are proper tight? have they got nylon washers under the top cap?

The noise happens when going over bumps.

The dampers aren't uprated and the top caps are tight, but there aren't any nylon washers. Where abouts should the washer go? between the castle nut nut and top cap??

no. they go between the top of the insert, and the top cap on the strut. without them fitted you can have the top cap as tight as you like but the insert will still slide about in the strut

oh right, well there is a nylon washer in there if I seem to remember and another washer that stops the damper moving side to side.
