Tuned AEE lump

Featured Replies

hi folks, i dont know if i've posted this in the right section or not but i thought i'd show you how far i've got with my project, i'ts a 1.6 polo engine (AEE) which is going to end up in a skoda felicia.. any questions, feel fry to ask

camshaftfitted.jpg

camshaft from piper, only arrived yesterday

fuelrailandbodies.jpg

throttle bodies from dbilas dynamic in germany

manifoldfitted.jpg

stainless steel 4-2-1 manifold from ebay seller in holland

emptyengine.jpg

engine block prior to chemical cleaning, honing and surface grinding the deck

headported.jpg

cylinder head, ported by myself

crosshatch.jpg

block, after machining/honing etc

mainbearingsin.jpg

just before the crankshaft went back in

pickuppipe.jpg

just before the sump went back on, if you are thinking about getting one of those windage trays in the group buy section the hole directly above the number one rod(left) doesn't line up and would need a new hole drilling, plus there isn't enough clearance for the crank to turn without fouling it so it would need some bending to make it work

nice to see what u have done so far , i have an AEE lump in my car and needs a tune so let me know how it goes after its back in . how much has it cost u so far ??

What does the throttle body set-up cost?

What management will you be running?

Looks very tidy.

what size of cam ?

specs please ...

Great work, you keeping standard pistons? keeping the cylinders the same size?

  • Author

yes, i am using the standard pistons, 76.5mm bores

cleanpistons.jpg

the camshaft is a piper 'ultimate road' cam. 268 degrees, 108 degree LCA 10.87mm lift

using the emerald k3 ecu,

Loom.jpg

i made this loom up myself, it's basically a cut-n-shut or an oem loom

i dread to think how how money this had cost, approx £400 for the throttle bodies plus another £200 for the suitable intake manifold, £200 for the cam, £170 for the manifold, £680 for the emerald ecu, £180 for the fuel injectors, plus loads of bit and pieces from the scrapyard.... ironically the engine was the cheapest bit, paid £21.50 for it off ebay, but it was in desperate need of a rebuild.... not to mention all the bearings, seals, gaskets, bolts, greases, sealants etc that are needed...... trust me, it's not economically viable, i'm only doing it because sombody on briskoda told me it was impossible to get 140bhp from a "sh*t old 8v polo engine!"

Get on the blower to Wossner for some custom pistons!! they're good! up the compression ratio a little what are they standard? 10:1? 9.5:1?

Edited by TimW

well done mate

go on yerself!

prove um wrong!

how much bhp you hopin for?

too late, i did look at the sorg motorsport oversized pistons too, but they come out at around £450 (which isn't much more than the standard pistons) but in my opinion it isn't worth it, the standard compression ratio is 9.8:1 which is nearly perfect for naturally aspirated engines running unleaded anyway.... without wanting to go too far reeling off pages on the evils of compression, volumetric efficiency and ignition timing, basically any engine will make more power with advance ignition and lower compression, but it does rather much depend on VE, and this engine will have a higher VE so lower compression is far better for power, but not so good for economy

how much bhp you hopin for?

i reckon around 130-140bhp maybe

Looks cool, let us know how you get on :D:thumbsup:

Them ITB's will give you most of that! It'll sound a beast!!! You getting it fully mapped the emerald when its back in the car? :) what car is it going in? skoda? or polo?

wow looks like top work mate and should go very well! what gearbox you going to be running it on as that's going to help you alot! i've seen a turbo'd AEE lump in PVW before which was good for a fair bit more than 140bhp!

yeah, i'm going to get it as close as i can myself, then i'm taking it to jkm motor services in portmouth, they will map it all on thier dyno dynamics rolling road

i'm going to be using a skoda gearbox unfortunately (dont say it!! i know they are rubbish compared to an 085) i plan to use the 4.11:1 final drive from an early 1.3 felicia estate model mated upto the 1.6 felicia gearset, it will be revvy and noisy, but having that set of gears will make better use of the top end poke from the engine

It says your at hayling, not far from fareham, come down to the vag meeting when its complete i'd love to hear/see this!

like tim said definately have to bring it down to one of the fareham meets and run it up for us!

yeah i will, i work in fareham so i'm never too far away

kool! canni wait!

awesome look forward to that!

Looks impressive - that manifold is pretty special, but i was more interested in the cam. Bit out of my price, though I'm tempted to make an exception. Interesting oil pump - Looks like a pre '85!

Mine was out of a Felicia, the gearbox was totally different, with starter at the front, and the fly was massive. I've just bought a '91 four-speed Polo MK2F box and am hoping that'll be able to handle this torquey engine - even if you dont manage 140bhp,you'll have too much grunt to be bothered by it

This is just the sort of thread i was affraid of, if someone doesnt hurry up and buy my AEE engine from the classified section soon, I can see myself going down a similar route and selling a kidney to do so!!!

this engine is from a very late 1998 run-out model. it is strange because it has the same duocentric oil pump that the later 16v lupos have rather than the chain driven oil pump that the other aee lumps have

oilpumpback.jpg

yeah, the flywheel is massive on the 1.6 engined felicia's, because there is a special plate about 5cm thick for adapting the gearbox bellhouse for fitting the skoda gearboxes, so the flywheel has to be 5cm thicker than normal

Are you uprating the conrods? The standard ones aren't too clever. I'm part way through a smiliar build and a set of uprated rods is going to set me back about £400.

Nice build, like Gaz says, I'd revise your bottom end slightly, the later engines aren't renound for their strength (hence the reason i stuck with a 3f motor- means i can kick its head in and not worry)

But having said that, if you are serious about getting big bhp, you need big rpms, meaning steel crank, and the necessary upgraded pistons, rods and fastners, not a cheap build by any means.

Look forward to seeing it finished though :-D

Fuck me thats alot of money on an AEE

Why not do it to a 16v engine, with more valves and higher compression ratio as standard?

would most likely give you a good 170bhp with the correct cams?

i did think of that, in fact i do have a 16v (AFH) engine sat here, but it's a bit of a headache fitting it to the skoda engine mounts, it's not impossible, but it would need a bit of fiddling to get it in
