and here's why

mounts.jpg

the right hand engine mounting brackets are totally different on the skoda for the aee engine

the one on the left is the skoda one, on the right is the 6n polo one

the AEE and AFH should be the same engine mounts tho should they not

edit ok i see that pic now

  • Author

also to clarify it, if anybody is thinking of using a skoda aee engine in thier polo as a replacement, the timing belt covers are different too, i've got a set of polo ones and skoda ones kicking about somewhere, i'll take a photo of them later and post it up

Both those engine mounts have the same bolt pattern so I don't see why you couldn't fit an AFH engine or 1.6 16V GTI engine with AFH head unless the cylinder head gets in the way somehow?

cant use the later gti engine because the engine mounting is on the side of the cylinder head on those so it's totally different again. the reason you cant use the AFH engine is because there is an extra timing belt idler in one of the bolt holes where the engine mount goes on the 8v engine, so a custom engine mounting would be needed...

as i said... it can be done, but not easily, unless of course you weld a polo engine mounting plate to the chassis

Fair doos. Anyone done a big engine conversion in one of these? ie 1.8T, 2.0 16v etc. I know the felicia has a 1.9D so the block fitment should be possible...

  • Author

yeah, jbs did a 1.8T, and awesome gti did a vr6 a while back....

i've been looking at putting a 2.0 16v in there soon too, gonna run round for a few months before i start collecting parts etc to do it

very interested to see how this turns out mate!!! looking out for an aee for my coupe to transplant also,..though i doubt I'd be doing this much work too soon. although i will say....it seems you where the person who outbid me on ebay by 1.50 haha,.i was gutted on the loss but seeing it now I'm sorta glad to see someone dedicated to have taken it and makeing something rather special out of it!! good luck with the work dude.

you aren't missing anything by loosing out on this engine, it was disgusting inside, i was hoping to not have to strip the bottom end down, but it needed it because it was so bad, it looked like it has never seen an oil change since it came out of the factory

ahhh well i was planning on a complete rebuild anyway. long as i had that block haha. well youve got thru it now so good luck on the rest.

This may seem a ridiculous suggestion, and theres probably a reason it wouldnt work, but given that the AEE and AFH are both 76.5mm bores. (presuming of course that the heads will fit, oilways lining up etc.) Would it not be possible to fit the AFH 16 valve head and pistons to the AEE 1.6 bottom end, making a 1.6 16 valve engine that should bolt straight into your skoda on the stock mounts. Just a thought....

  • Author

that's another valid point well made.. the AFH pistons have a lower compression height than the 1.6 pistons (2.5mm lower in fact) so the compression ratio would be very low, but then again the pistons from a lupo gti would work a treat. and yes the AFH head will fit neatly onto the aee block without too many issues (albiet you would have to leave the location dowels out) because there's nowehere to put them on the aee block, but again it's the issue over the right hand engine mounting, there is an extra timing belt idler on the 16v AFH engine which goes in one of the holes where the engine mounting goes on the 8v engines, hence the 16v mounting bracket is a different shape...

like i say, it's not impossible to do, but it would need some head scratching

Sounds like an easy (ish) 1.6 16v conversion into a Mk2/2F though. 1.6 AFH? Yes please.

well, as soon as i've finished with this felicia i will have a look into doing that conversion, i will do a step by step guide for others to use covering everything from engines to gearboxes, wiring etc etc..... all i need to do is get sombody to point me in theright direction as to where i can find a decent mk2 polo coupe going cheap

The decent Mk2 Polo coupe going cheap thing has screwed me over lol.

What happened to the £50 or free to good home ones!?

It's possible, my mates done it in his Mk II Cab

With the standard pistons, dropping 2.5mm you should drop to around an 8:1 compression ratio, presuming of course that the head combustion chamber volumes are the same. (I'm not sure they are, I'd have thought the 1.4 would be smaller) Thats too low for a N/A engine but good if you were planning a 1.6 16v turbo  Even though this setup would be hard to fit in your skoda it would fit in my polo a treat.

8:1 = G40 compression ratio doesn't it?

That would be handy. I bet you'd want uprated rods though.

I'm pretty sure the 1.4 pistons will be too long, as they utilise the same rods on the 1.4 and 1.6, the block is the same so the only way to make up the difference in the crank throw is to have a taller piston in the 1.4. so 1.4 pistons in a 1.6 is a no go. Pretty sure you have to alter the 1.6 pistons as well so they will clear the extra valves.

there are a few different variations around, but generally speaking the 1.6 enignes have 136mm conrods (centre to centre) and the 1.4 engines have 144mm rods.

Have you measured your set as the 1.6s are supposed to be 144mm as well. Virtually all the lesser hp small block engines since 1994 (everything but the 1.6 16v GTI and the 999cc engines) have the rods with part number 036 198 401, which is about 20 different engines.

there are a few different types of rods used in the later engines. some have the caps which are formed by literally just snapping the big end in half using a flypress, then there's a normal split type, and there's one which has the locating tabs for the big end bearings too.. most of which you can get in both lengths :D

Any updates skodaboy?

And which big end bearings did you need? Because i never found the correct ones for mine (18.5mm wide,no locating tabs),and am currently using some that had locating tabs that i flattened to fit! Doesnt sound too healthy (doesnt rattle, but its more mechanical than it should be) and its only a matter of time before a cap bolt lets go..

Come on skodaboy, wheres that update? :tear:
