I've seen for sale boxes specifically designed for dumping 6x9s into, I'm considering getting them and obviously putting 6x9s in them. Has anyone used them?

I know 6x9s aren't the best way for good music, but they'll do me fine.

Main question - should I build a heavy duty shelf and mount the speakers in it, or should I get these boxes and attach them to the shelf?

the main reason 6x9's arent considered very good is because when they are on a parcel shelf for example...and theres a sub in the boot the 6x9s are having to fight with the sub....basically the sub pushin air one way...6x9's are tryin to go another...

so i reckon them boxes would help as they'd have their own air all to themselves

the boxes should work very well. you will get much better bass reproduction (its worth filling the boxes with foam to improve damping factor) the main reason people dislike 6x9s is because all of the noise is coming from behind you. its true that they dont work to well when sharing the same airspace as a sub too. 6x9s cetainly arent for people looking for good sound staging, but the are perfectly suitable for producing decent sound quality and reasonable volume without taking up the whole of your boot

Yeah, I constructed boxes for my 6by9's, and basically covered my parcel shelf with 10mm MDF, and then stuck the amp in the middle of them, made a noticeable difference, much increased clarity and less distortion.

the reason there is less distortion is due to the vacuum the 6x9s produce when in a sealed enclosure. this improves the control and precision of the driver.

6x9s were designed for people who could not have a sub due to space and depends what 6x9s you have i have the infinity kappa series which go through crossovers like mid and tweeters etc and a sealed box would be better mate

Ill second that,

If you have a sub buy 2 pair of components 6.5s for example

If you just want a little bit (or in some case's of good 6x9s) ample bass then 6x9s and front components,

saves boot space and more cables.

would 6x9 boxes be better on top of a mdf shelf or hanging off the bottom with the 6x9 in the shelf?
