I'm sure I've seen a couple of MK4's on standard steelies that have been painted black, i just need a decent picture to see what they look like properly. I'm planning on blacking the centres and polishing the outer lip. If anyone has done that, then pictures of them would be great!

Also am i better stripping back the silver paint with sandpaper/flapper wheel? or using paint stripper? if paint stripper whats the best to buy? just average turps, or is there proper stuff to buy?

If you polish the outer lip on a steel wheel it will rust in a matter of hours. And they normally don't look very good. Just so you know.

Really?! :( thats not very good! even if you lacquer them? looks like they'll be all black then! or white lip.. not sure how it'll look though...

if you lacquer them they might stay shiny-ish but they'll never have the shine an alloy does when polished.

Yeah my mate said about clip on lips, I'd be worried of losing them though and I've not seen any for 13" wheels. I think ill go for a white lip, chrome spray paint will just look shite wont it, probably chip to hell aswell I'd presume?

I've used the chrome spray before and it's hard work to get a good finish it shows up absolutely every imperfection. My G-laderseite ARB block metal bits are painted with it lol.

White it is then should pretty good if i do the center caps aswell, ill just have to see how it goes, if it looks crap i can allways go over the white with a couple of layers of black.

Any ideas of gettin rid of the old paint? just a bit of elbow grease and some high grit sand paper?

cool, ill get some of that then, think ill nip to B+Q tomorrow and pick some stuff up. What grades of wet and dry will i need? i saw 600 to 2000? but that might of been for polishing.

2000 will nearly mirror polish the rim,but it'd have to be done with the wheel spinning at speed on the car. Which means no air valve. And laquer doesnt stick to polished steel too well. The white rim is a good idea on a white car. Best lowered with small tyres,though.
