With all service intervals followed plus precautions such as water pump/gearbox oil replacment etc. What is the lifespan of a vw polo as I saw a mk2 advertised the other day that had done 210,000 miles.

Does anyone own a polo that has broke the 1/4 million mile barrier?

I think there's a G40 on here that's broken the 1/4 million mile barrier as it happens.

my mk2 is on 246k and its an 86 1ltr very tappetty other than that everything is great serviced every 5000 miles still pulls well and is all standard all be it a bit tatty aswell.

If its tappety,its not serviced correctly. Having the rockers adjusted,or they/tappets replaced if worn should have it like new again. I know of two cars that have exceeded three million miles - an early '80s Ford Granada and a late '80s BMW 3-series. And a neighbour had a Cavalier DL that hit 700k. If a car is treated as it should be,it'll run forever. The highly engineered VW Polo is certainly no exception. But they're never treated as they should be,and almost every car dies of abuse.

3 million miles? I thought that Volvo with about 2.5 million miles was a record holder.

If its 300,000 miles you mean, my dad's Transit went round the clock twice and was on (2)88k just before he sold it. Probably done over 300k now.

I jumped into a passat taxi a few months back that was on 300k miles...and it was a 2001 car!

Last i knew of the Granada,it was a bare shell,as it had gone soft and needed seam welding. But the car is the valid registration,and its still on the road.

Another three series was an ex Mobil car - Mobil put one million miles on it in just a couple of years to advertise their oil - it didnt even need more than standard servicing. I dont know what happened to it after that,or if it was the same car.

Autocar drove 10k miles in a Mondeo in just one week,and all it needed within that time was a light bulb.

Its poor driving,stop/start,cold running etc that kills cars. Taxis do so well because they're warmed up during most of their use,and driven by someone who has to pay a possibly serious fuel bill.
