Abortive attempt at lowering my car

Featured Replies

I spent the best part of 7 hours yesterday attempting to fit lowering suspension with absolutely no success at all.

Wasted an hour removing the drum brake, to discover haynes mentions nothing of this BECAUSE IT DOESNT NEED DOING! :retard:

Got them back together, removed the first rear strut after a lot of swearing, and discovered that the assembly at the top of the strut was well and truly fused together, not a chance in hell of getting ti off. Couldnt be arsed trying to wangle the spring back on as the car isnt being driven, so i just put the old knackered shock back on and wound it down - comedy slammage, looks like an old citroen with collapsed suspension!

I rang GSF today to order all the parts i need, collars and buffers etc, and they only stock the bump stops apparently?! Where can i get all the mounting plates and bushes from to fit this new kit?

Also, what would be the effect of running the car without springs? The damage to the shocks doesnt matter cause they have been fucked for ages, but would it damage the car? l know it would ride dead low as it is in one corner at the mo lmao, and it will handlt shit too, but will there be any other damage done? Its almost tempting for the completely slammed appearance hehe...

I would say no to the no springs thing as its proper dangerous!

As for the suspension, Ste took some of the bits off my standard suspension and used it with the coileys.

Not sure what the deal is with mk3's though.

Maybe i didnt make it clear, and I'm not saying this in a negative way to you dublass... I know that you are supposed to use the upper mount assembly from the standard kit, but i can't get the fuckers off, they're rusted to buggery and beyond - theres no reusing them.

What i need to know is where can i get replacements from?!

Skatty, I should have some upper spring pans you can have. Then you just need the rubber bits, unless you don't mind having the old ones until you're sorted out.

Yeha saves the day again! That would be sweet, i might be able to get hold of the rest of the bits somehow. I also need to source some front hubs (?) as the current front dampers are fused to the part they sit in.

The rubber boot/gaiter thing is torn open though so i will need to find one of them too.

they are usually rusted on, did u try hammering it off?

It looked well and truly fucked, the ring underneath the top mount just disintegrated and the long thick rubber boot is ripped wide open. I will try hammering it off, but i dont want to fuck it so it doesnt fit nae more.

Go down to your local VW dealer and get everything you need there. When we do Mk3 suspension we tend to replace loads of parts. I can try and get you the part numbers you need along with a diagram later.

Sounds so easy, 'Local VW Dealer' - its right across the other side of the bloody city, and i cant drive there!

Still, i'll get there by hook or by crook lol. Cheers Tav, part numbers would be brilliant.
