Are they all crap or is it just mine? the reception is bloody awefull,any ideas on improving it?

Yer there utter shite compared to the mahoooooosive ones you can have on your nearside wing. Think modern cars are ok with them, but my GT beesting were not the best.

I never listen to the radio in the car so I've not really noticed but my mate swears by removing them and putting one of those sticky ones in his window.

The beesting I have is a hella amplified one. I think I got it from ECP for about 12 quid in 2002.

If your aerial is anything like mine, you have to connect a live feed to the amp in the base of the aerial. If you don't the amp won't be switched on and your reception will be pants, as the inactive amp will block signals. With the amp switched on I can pick pretty much anything up.

I can't remember the colour, but I used the feed from my headunit that corresponds to "automatic aerial". I think G40's have a similar setup.

There should be two wires on your beesting. One is for the aerial, the other a live feed for the amplifier in the base of the aerial. You run a wire from your headunit to this, its the one that provides +12v when the headunit is switched on, called "automatic aerial".

Sorry for sounding thick,but does this mean i'l have to drop the headlining to get to the bottom of the aerial then,then run a wire all the way to the front dash to the radio automatic aerial wire? Behind my radio in the dash i can see the aerial lead but no other wire attachted to that?

Any ideas how the beesting comes off the roof,unscrew or bolted from underneath?

On a mk3 polo, to get at the underneath of the aerial you have to go in through the headlining. I didn't trust myself to do it, so wussed out and had someone else do the job...

The aerial I have is the is the one referred to in the text, its an amplified Hella one from Euro car parts, it cost me about a £10-£15 and looks pretty OEM. The aerial cable and the feed to the amp feed down the ?C? pillar inside the headlining and then run alongside the main wiring loom that runs along the passenger side of the car. The aerial cable then plugs in the back of my radio, the feed to the amp runs off the "automatic aerial" pin on the car radio's ISO DIN connector.

As the previous post says, I would check there is nothing interfering with the existing feed from your aerial first. The last thing you want to do is go to the hassle of removing your headlining and changing your aerial, to find you're still getting the same problem.

I remember I had a radio with a similar problem, had a whirring noise as soon as the engine ran. Whirring increased with revs, so I knew it was some kind of interference from the engine. In the end I replaced the radio..... You might want to try plugging a friends radio in to yours.
