My little orange Polo

Featured Replies

Ok here is a little bit about my Polo and how i came across it.

I've always liked cars that are a bit different, something rare and a little cool. I've always thought Mk1 polos are funky and make a change from mk1 golfs.

In september 2006 i sold my beloved VX220 Turbo. I had had it from new and it was far from standard, i loved it! It ripped up the road, but i needed money to put into a house so it had to go. I had a que of people wanting it and it went with in a matter of hours. So i was planning to put all the cash away and maybe buy something fun to work on. Which is where my polo hunt began. I had been keeping my eyes peeled for a while, but not seen anything that i loved. Then up came the 10,000 miler and i loved the orange colour, so after the first person let her down i went to look at it. Now its a great car, but had a few dings, unmatching bumpers, hole in the seat, etc and i couldnt bring myself to part with the cash for it (i kind of wish i had now). It was and and still is an amazingly rare and great car, but not for me.

So back on the hunt, off i went to look at a little white car, but the paint job wasnt great and it was a little new, but drove like a dream after my friend and i got it started, again not for me. Its funny how these cars have ended up on here and are now both totally wicked cars and much better than mine .

I was begining to give up and decided i was going to get a pre 56 beetle as i couldnt afford my dream ghia, let alone a 356 pre A. So i had cooled the hunt down when i got chatting to some guys from PVW at E38, i mentioned i wanted a mk1 polo, then out jumped a long haired chap and said "you looking for a mk1 polo, you can have mine". I got chatting to him and he is a really safe bloke, he told me all about the car and how it had been sat on his drive for a few years and needed a bit of work to get it going. His other half also had a Mk1, a 81 green one. We swapped numbers and a time was set to view.

I took my girlfriend with me and she couldnt understand why i wanted it, but i loved it and it was orange, i had to save it. So i had a look around it and worked out what it needed to get in running. I went back with a friend armed with tools and parts, it needed a new core plug so i drilled out the old and in with the new, a new battery and terminal (i had an old subaru one so that must be worth at least 7bhp), a few tweeks of the carb, a bit of fuel and she was running. It was making a screaming noise from the water pump, but i set off home in it anyway. I live a good few hours away and having to stop every few miles to top it up with water made it fun.

It was home and in the garage, on went a new water pump, plugs, leads, condensor, battery, proper teminals, alternator, pads, discs, suspension, bushes, top mounts, full exhaust, etc. I fibreglassed the wings so it looked better and it passed an mot, then it went to No Rice for a few months and not been out much since.

Its an amazing car and will start on the key everytime and when i needed it it came to my resque. My gilrfriend collapsed at work and i had no other car at the time (my usual vectra wasnt at home), so my only mode of transport was the little polo, i got some odd looks, but it did me proud :-D

My friend stumbled across my dream lowlight 59 ghia which i had to have, so i swore i wouldnt touch the polo until i had finished restoring the ghia. Well that didnt last long and now the ghia is sat in the garage and the polo is getting my attention. It all good practice for the 59.

I have an OE adiction and its an expensive one. I keep buying correct OG parts for both cars. The polo was ment to be a bit of fun and the ghia my proper amazing car. I cant help it, i have built up loads of the correct parts for the polo.

I have now started a bit of a resto on it. It was quite rusty in places and maybe i should have brought something else, i even looked at some more, but i love my little polo too much. Well theres no turning back now and all the rust has now gone :). To think when i was looking i wasnt happy if it had a slight dent

Wow what a load of old waffle.

Hey mate hows things

Cant belive your ignoring the Ghia, i thought you would have got bored of that bare metal look. So it seems all the Mk1s are coming out the wood work and to make things even more fun everyone is keeping their cards close to thier chests.

Its gonna be good this summer. When is your expected finish date??

wow tahts looking great what you got planned?

Cheers :)

Hi you ttei, the ghia hasnt been forgottan too much. It has new wheel bearings, serviced brakes, a new mot, its in primer and i'm still working on the body. I'm booked onto a resto course at the local college so the ghia is going to be worked on a lot soon. I decided to do the polo as practice for the real thing.

I know some people will cry, but if i cock the polo up it isnt the end of the world, but if i cock the ghia up i'd cry.

As for the plans, well you'll have t wait and see :). I'd like to get it finished soon, but i feel bad about making lots of noise for the neighbours so i only work on it now and again.

I'm thinking escort cosworth arches, nova sr spoiler and 19's

Will yours be done for E38?

Yep it will be cool to rock up with all the mk1's together 8-)

I'm gonna take the cosworth kit and 19's lightly and hope you are messing lol ( i no u are really) and well if you do cock up with the finish and your not happy with the car i will alyways give you a curly wury some flat american cola and a 99 fiesta mag ;)

I think the arches will really set the look of the car off, once the laguna front splitter is on it will look swwweet

That not far off what i paid for it. I think they said a pack of juicey fruits and a can of coke in PVW mag.

dont make me stretch to the used £1 sex product to go with the fiesta mag (when i said that i ment the porno not the car mag lol) well I've just googled the kit and I'm pleasently surprised I've just bleanded one on your car (from the pics on edition) and it looks good i put some widened steelies on too and wow oh but sorry i cant post teh pic it ownt let me as it was done in image ready not photochop

Have you managed to sort your arches out mate????

If you need anymore tips give us a shout

Love the colour!

Didnt it used to be something to do with PVW Magazine???

Yeah man, the car will be rollllllllllllllllling :)

Yeah i'm getting there with the arches. I thought i'd give it a go myself, the best way to learn and thats what the polo is for.

Cheers dude, i'll give you a chout if i need some tips.

Yeah i got the car from Greg (PVW's old designer) and i think Elliot may have had it at one point briefly. Who ever had it before Greg did some real bad jobs at patching and covering things up with tons of filler. All fixed now tho :).

I Really need a passenger side wing, can someone just unbolt there and post it to me please :)

wow i think that spoiler is alright but all the other mods arent to my taste... but we will see good luck with it

I'm amazed that someone likes the spoiler.

A few more bits done.

One of the new inner wings fitted, it was a tiny bit rusty :)

DSCF3601.jpg

The rear wiper hole plated, only done a little so it can be removed and the wiper put back on if need be.

DSCF3608.jpg

One the the new arches fitted. In the end i only had to use a little bit of the replacement arch. I took it all back to solid metal, then reomeved the rusty bits and let the new arch in. I also replaced a little bit of the sill at the bottom of the arch.

Not bad for a first go :)
