has anyone dealt with the HALFORDS brake and clutch fluid??

A one litre bottle should be enough unless you go mental when you're bleeding it. I'd use castrol or summat like that, DOT4 should be ok for road use. I'm sure the Halfrauds own stuff is ok, but when it comes to brakes I'm a bit fussy.

5.1 has the higher boiling point, useful if you cane your brakes I suppose.

If you want to replace your fluid completely I'd say it depends how competent you are at bleeding brakes. Obviously it will be easier to see where the new fluid starts if the system is dry, but the addition of air into the pipes will make bleeding more difficult, especially if you have a brake regulator fitted (GT/G40).

Personally I'd drain the system dry unless my old fluid was black and obviously a different colour to the new. They shouldn't mix.

my gt is a conversion and dont have the regulator..

Get a one-man bleed kit from Hal'n'freds. Simple to use,cheap to buy,its just a pipe with a non-return valve on the end.

Before you pump the fluid out,push the caliper piston/drum cylinder all the way in to expel the old fluid,or some old fluid might survive in there. Now fit the kit,undo the nipple and slowly pump out the fluid. Dont let the MC run out completely (but get most out),keep topping it up with new 5.1 as it empties (the Halfords stuff is fine,and is only £2 a litre more). Once fresh is coming out the nipple,tighten nipple,fit pads/disc and pump the brake to fill caliper/cylinder. Repeat for other three wheels. Pump brakes when its all good,to ensure its all in them,and give the MC a final top up. One litre will be enough,unless you flush plenty old out. I used two litres when i bought mine,as i didnt know when they were last bled and over-flushed them for good measure.

Sounds simple. If you're using new - thus empty - brake pipes,it should be the same,pumping them until no more air bubbles come out. Use the correct brake spanner,and best to use a socket when removing old pipe fittings,having cut the old pipes off with wire cutters - as they're likely to be well seized.
