Hi people.

I have 175/65/R13 tyres at the moment and my front two Toyos' are coming to the end of their life. The middle tread is almost 2mm whilst the outside treads are between 3mm-4mm. This was due to me overinflating them for many months so ignore that bit.

I was looking at the best tyres for the best value and the Pirelli P3000s came trumps at £35 a go. The Continental EcoContacts were only a little more expensive. What are people's experiences with the Pirelli tyres? I'm looking for something long lasting with good grip in wet and dry.

well I've just ordered a yoko 175/60/13. for 44 quid delivered. theyve actually gone up they used to be 36 delivered. but i checked the size you want and there was only one tyre avaiable a maxxis?? you sure its 175/65/13?

I'd go for the Conti's, some Yoko's or Toyo's all are good tyres and are around the same price mark.

They're really good tyres, I would only put T1R's or T1S's on a G though as they've got more grip that the CH01's. They're not quite as soft as Yoko's so should last longer, but when pushed they stick like shit to a blanket

Hi again. Thank you so much for the responses to my post. My tyres are definitely 175/65/R13. Speed rating T. There are three pages of tyres on MyTyres.co.uk. I'm either going for the Pirelli or Continentals. I was using Toyo CleanProxes which lasted me almost two years and 18,000 miles which is pretty good.

Any other thoughts please let me know.

I'm interested in this too, need new rubber. What about Kumhos ? any good? Also what about 185/60 13s instead of 175/60 ? Not bothered about looks, just grip levels + handling.

nope aslong as the tyres on the same axle (ie front or back) are the same. so u could run 2 175/50/13 on the front and 2 175/65/13 on the back which is perfectly legal.

in my experience kumho's are wank

yeah as long as they are on the same axle your fine,mine got through its mot like it,i would personal go for the toyo's as they are both long lasting and have high grip even on crap roads i never use anything else,get the t1-r's if you are after a proper high performance tyre,as they have got an extra line of grip on the outside

I couldn't get the Toto T1s in the size I was after. I've bought the Pirelli P300s at £35 each.

Imo the yokos are a little better,but dont last very long,Toyo's do hold sooo well but start feathering on the edges after a few miles.

Bugger didn't know that Kwik Fit had such a good deal on. Was that the price, fitted? I bought the Pirelli's from Mytyres at £35 each.

I'm after some rear tyres soon. Won't go for Pirelli again as they are rather expensive. I have a nice pair on the front and they've bedded in well. I might get some Yokohamas' for the rear. Need some advice, cheers.

Some pieces of tyre advice

- Try and stick with same brand on all 4 corners - a must on 4WD

- should have, at minimum, same tyres on each axle, ie FL & FR same tyre

- if different brands F & R then go with similar wear, speed and tread patterns, ie don't mix directional and asymetrical, etc

- I try to avoid different sizes on F and R on FWD

- Tyres that have good grip tend to not have such longevity and vice-versa

- I find that directionals are better in the wet but don't last very long in the summer due to lower wear rating

- Not all Top Brand, ie Pirelli and Mich are as good as you'd think

- Tyres that work wonder on a 3.0L BMW might be crap on a 1.0 FWD Polo and vice-versa

- Tyres performance changes dramatically with wear, so tyre tests are usually pish as they rate tyres based on thme being new with 8mm tread, eg Hankook K406s get slated in tyre tests, but I ran them on my Audi 80 TDi for 3 years (2 sets) cos after the 1st 1000-1500 miles they faltten out, get grippier and start to perform (on that car with that size of tyre)

- Rotate you tyres ever 2000-3000 miles and get the most out of them

My choice of tyres to date;

Eagle F1s - fantastic grip in wet and dry, wear quite quickly, utter pish for the 1st 100-300 miles until scrubbed in

Pirelli Rosso - all round good tyre

Bridgstone RE050A - change these at about 3mm as they get shite real quick at this level

Pirelli P6000 - wear like hell but pretty good IMO

Faklen 512s - not the best wear but overall decent

Hankook K406 - not a performance tyre but has good charactersitics for daily driving / crusing

Mich Pilot Sports 1 - just plain crap, wear crap, grip crap, slide in the wet, alomst dangerous. Came std on my MK4 R32 and were ditched after 4000 miles.

Blackcircles are ACE!! I've used them in the past. Get a MyTyres price, then when you get a quote from BlackCricles, fully fitted, work out what fitting would be on top of the MyTyres price and take that to BlackCircles as you target price.

They've always been up for some banter and haggling and will try their best to match MyTyres + fitting.

Friends who have ran Avons would also agree..... but not in a good way, ie they're not so good in the wet and you can be sure of that. But again tyres are specific to cars as mentioned above, so whats crap on a TT might work well on a Polo.

I've never ran Avons based on feedback from friends.

My next tyre purchases are going to be winters.

Stuck between Bridgestone Blizzaks and Yokohama Winter T's at the moment.

I've run most types on everthing from my golf gtis mk1s mk2s mk3s mk4s corrados 16v vr6 and my mk4 4 16v polo and my audi s2 and rs2 and once you get used to a resonable make you stick with them the other brand where fula extremo "goodyear" but the new tread type isnt a patch on them its all down to the driver
