Hi,

I spent the weekend working on my mates 6n as it had some problems with water pooling in the footwells.

We hosed it down and it seemed to be coming from the doors so I replaced the rubber doorway seals on both sides and I also replaced the sound absorber/seals (the foam one behind the door trim) all coming to a hefty bill as parts were from VW

This solved the problems on the passenger side and the leakage from behind the door trim on the drivers side.

Now with the downpours we've had today I see water pooling again on the drivers side only this time I watched and got a mate to hose it down in the rain and it seems to be coming up from below the carpet and pooling at the lowest point when saturated.

Does anyone have any ideas which way the waters coming in as it is certainly not the doors now.

hi buddy i have the same sorta problem with my mk 3 gt and it was coming from the battery bay and dripped on to the carpet wear i didnt see and need made a nice little foot bath for me

so me and my dad for to weld the hole battery bay up what fun hay

lift the carpets and check for any damage

possibly check the door connector as well (where the wires come through)

I had nightmares with wet passenger footwell on my mk 3 ... Tried everything: New window seals, replaced the plastic membrane behind the inside door panels, siliconed all up behind the dash, all the panel joints, even found the gromet that the bonnet release cable went through had a manufacturing defect! ... Much as I couldn't believe it, it was the windscreen seal leaking! ... Couldn't see it coming in anywhere, but a new screen seal fixed it.

Sure I've come across 6n's pulling water in through the heater, and depositing it in the footwells through the ducting...

Get a 3mm drill bit,and pop the floor panel at its lowest point. Sorted.

You'll have to check for brake/fuel pipe clearance and put up with the car smelling of mushrooms,but it should work well enough otherwise..

Without having taken the carpet up yet I think the water is coming through the pedal box...would that make sense?

i seem to have this problem in a much more extreme case I'm my mk2 polo whenever i hit a puddle i get a small downpour or water coming from above my feet which then soaks my feet and my floor mat not really bothered about it soaking the car as its a bit of an old dog however having wet feet and having to drive for an hour with wet feet is unpleasant i discovered last night thats to go with the horrible loud banging mentioned in my other topic. :( tis also annoying that after an hours searching this morning i could t find anywhere for the water to come in :s

Just a little bit of feedback after spending many hours hunting leaks and solving them:

1. Rubber door way seals

These were slightly deformed due to age and were letting in a little water when there was a heavy downpour. These were replaced by newer ones off a breaker from a scrappy.

2. Door trim sound absorber/weather seal

This is a foam sheet that is stuck down behind the door card it acts as a sound insulation and a weather seal. If it is ripped or not properly sealed it will let water in via the water running down the window glass.

TIP: The original foam sheet is 3D molded and very expensive and would need to be ordered in from Germany. The replacement for this is a roll of foam; that is 1 per door and you stick it with Sikaflex and trim to size and shape. It's about a 1/3 of the price of the original.

3. Drainage holes

Doors:

At the bottom of the door there are a number of holes to let water drain out of the doors as the water runs down the window. These usually get blocked by a build up of dirt and should be cleared using a flat blade screwdirver or similar to prevent water being stored in the doors and sloshing about.

Sunroof:

The sunroof has 4 drainage holes inside 2 to the front and 2 to the rear. This was the major problem in my case; as the holes are attached to a tubes that carry the water away; one of these had disconnected letting water drain into the cabin. The tubes run from the sunroof under the headlining and down the A-pillars at the front and down the rear pillars at the back and exit under the rear bumper and near the door hinges at the front. These were also slightly blocked with dirt and were cleared using a length of flexible electrical wire.

Scuttle:

At the front of the car above the bonnet where the ECU and wiper motor are located are the scuttle drains, one each side, these get blocked up with dirt and leaf litter. To access them you have to remove the scuttle cover; be warned the clips that hold these in place are very rigid and snap so you may need some new ones from VW. Also check the Pollen/Cabin filter as if they are wet they will lead to a musty smell in the cabin so should be renewed. I cleared the drains by vacuuming the dry leaf litter out and by using a pressure washer through the drainage holes, which left a large amount of dirt on my drive so I knew the job was done.

Hey buddy I had prob's with flooding last year, I found the foam was an ass last time also. another one for the rear can be rear lights if you change them. Where'd you get this foam from?

They have two versions the original moulded to shape one as on the Polo 6n which is about £33+vat or one they do in a roll which you have to cut and trim to shape as it's a 'universal' one this costs around £13. You stick it with a polyurethane one component adhesive sealant (which as it says sticks it and creates a water resistant barrier) such as SIKAFLEX.

Or I have found this foam sheeting on the roll to be similar to B&Q laminate flooring underlay which for a tenner you get about 10-15 metres which is a shed load more than VW's one and a half door lengths per roll.

Nice one, thanks for the info

I've got the same problem been to the local garage and quoted me £10-15.

he says the door membrane is the cause of the problem it could weared away as it is a 1997 or it could just teared apart
