-92 Polo Saloon 3F, upd. 11/06/2008

Featured Replies

Hello..

Found this forum a while ago, when bought my Polo. Forum has been a good source of info already, 'cause not many Polo's here in Finland.

The car has been daily driver for an old lady for the last 10 years. It's been taken care of quite nicely, not new but no rust issues and engine is in great condition. Has only around 100miles on it (169tkm as it has km-spped on it).

It's a normal Cl-model meaning here in Finland nothing extra, BUT as I luckily found out it has the 3F GT-engine in it with big bore intake manifold, the close-ratio 5-speed and whopping 75PS :-). Right now it is my daily driver to work (mrs's take's the Volvo to work..wonder why :-p ).

This is what it looked like at first.

First thing to do was to take off the poorly painted arches and put the ebay-wheels. Then suspension was ordered, with low as possible in mind. A couple weeks later i received 80/60 JOM cupoline setup. Package read 60/40, put this was the result. Looks a bit goofy to me with the 165/65 14" tires, which a bit too tall. So i ordered 155/55 14" Nankang's, and the result was much better looking, here and here with my friens G40.

Other additions are front and rear seat from a -84 mk1 GOlf GTI, pics to follow... This required qiute much mofication to the legs and other parts. passenger seat legs on the gti seatshad been shortened form 7cm, and for driver... Well, I wanted to keep the hight adjustment on the stock Polo seat, so I took off all the fabric and welded all the GTI seat parts to the Polo seat frame. Took a couple of days to do it, but I pleased with the result.

Also a another ebay buy was ths G40 speedo and revcounter set, which was plug-play to do. Few screws of and on and no I can follow the easy revving 3F's moments better :-) .

Next thing is to come are front upper and lower strut brace's, K&N filter is waiting to put on and AFM might change to an golf 8V gti item. Hunt for a used 4-2-1 branch exhaust is on to...

BUT also the option to put G40 unit under the hood has been keeping me awake at night. Wether to put G40 or start building a screaming normally aspirated 1.3 engine? Totally different machines and power delivery, but I bet both would be fun 8-) . Around 100-120hp from a 1.3 or G40 with all the goodies..? :?: These are just thoughts, well see what happens during the winter in the carage.

To be continued..

awesome :)

I've never been a fan of those wheels, something about them, dunno what. Looks canny cool other than that though.

Thanks both!

The wheels were a kind of a compromise, but for bargain at 80e all four a good I think :-D . But other wheels are beeing searched, 7-9 in width and 13-14" in diameter.. See what happens with those.

Wheel arches will return when I get 'blackened' again. Paint came off easily in some parts, but sit bloody tight at others.. Maybe mk2 polo arches will be option, without the sidetrim then. The rear bumber's gap to the rear wheel arch looks silly now.

how wide are those wheels?

looks pretty mint

Wheels are 6", which gives a moderate stretch with the 155/55 14" tires.

tosi siisti auto, mä kyllä hommaisin g40:n jos toi olis mun :p

I really like it. We need more modded mk3 loons on here. Keep us updated. :)

good work fella! nice tire size too 8-)

Arvasin et joku kotimaan kielen taitaja täältäkin löytyy. 8-) Kiitos.

Thanks guys, I'll post updates and new pics when something is done (and when I remember to take pics  ).

Are you sure it's definately a 3F and not an NZ as fitted to loads of saloons?

Anyway, nice car. Looks tidy, and I love the wheels!

Very tidy car, I also think the wheels really suit it, especially at that drop.

very clean and like the wheels thik they have grown on me.

Are you sure it's definately a 3F and not an NZ as fitted to loads of saloons?

It's a 3F, according to original VW service manual and some Polo experts (which I'm not..). I was suprised too, happily of course 8-) .

your saloon looks lovely

8-)

like it alot!

very clean

lok sweeet, get a picture of the engine up.

It's nice to see another mk3 loon 8-)

Dan

Interesting, a factory 3F 'loon. Must have been special order or something, I don't know?

Got any more pics?

As you wish. Here's some pics.. And this is a daily commuter, so 90% of the time car is not clean.

Engine: not much to show here, than a rusty valve cover..retro? not....maybe during winter something will be done, or maybe not.

Pic: 1, 2.

Front needs spacers, and rear need maybe a little more than it allready has (20mm). Just got a ebay package containing some parts, we'll see what it'll look like.

Tis a 3f

Polo's come in special varieties over on the continent

Looks tough...I wouldn't mind one. keep it up

lovely and very rare i suppose, never seen a stock mk3 loon with a 3f.

nice, i'd have one..

i'm more impressed with the headlamp washers / size of the washer bottle than anything else lol how sad am i!

Here's a little update..

Got some air flow to the engine. Makes the little lump scream a little better definately, and doesn't sound too bad either 8-) . And then there's this ebay buy to get the used air out of the engine. Have to buy some exhaustpiping and mufflers first..and then do some welding. Hoping to get some more sounds (not too much) and maybe a hp or two..

Also changed the parking lights out of the headlights to the signals. Been thinking about clear signals, but can't get any for rear, so maybe not for the front either. And, I like 'em the orange too..more my kind of old (old like me..). But never know.. Maybe just have get a set to try. Also the badgeless grill found it's way home.

I 'found' some wider spacers for rear (25mm/side to replace the 20mm). They will be fitted as get some bolts shortened. Ok on the other side, but on the other few millimeters too long -> bolts touched the rear brakes assembly inside the brake drum. But been looking for some 13" wider wheels too... ;) Ebay is verrry dangerrous place.. :-D

Here's a pic of my mk1 golf seats that I fitted as a first mod to the car. Old, worn, fixed and welded to fit them..But worth the work compared to the original dinner-chairs on it.

  • 6 months later...

Some updates.

Summer is coming closer and eventually the snow will melt away and grass will be green again.. So these have been waiting for a while know for the better weather:RSL Cults in 7" and 8" 13" size with 175/50 and 195/45 rubber on 'em. Some others little item have been sourced too, shifter knob, some other 'retro' stuff.
