On the 1.2 3 cylinder engine as you look at it from the front of the car. On the left hand side just under the engine cover/air box is a disc shaped object about 5cm in diameter from which a pipe runs round the back of the engine somewhere. On my girlfriends car the pipe is collapsed and sucks in and out as the engine runs. Firstly, is this normal? Secondly, if not, would this cause excessive oil consumption?

Any clues would be good, it's used over a litre of oil in 50 miles and has no apparent leaks and the coolant seems fine. No smoke either so I'm a bit confused! (Although I imagine the cat would catch alot of the smoke?)

could you mean the EGR valve? any chance of a pic, I may be able to help you more.

Um no, the breather pipe shouldn't collapse but tend to as they age and get softer, you can get the replacement part from VAG or go in and ask for a servo pipe repair kit with the appropriate bends if they cant find the proper pipe on EKTA.Its part of the crankcase ventilation system.

That could cause excessive oil consumption but 1l to 50 miles is a hell of alot.Usually brings a warning light on aswell.

It's this bit I'm on about. Never really paid this engine much attention tbh. The rubber section of pipe leading from it is soft and when the engine runs it would appear that a vacuum created inside it sucks it flat. It then releases and sucks flat again almost like a heartbeat.

yup,thats the breather pipe going to the recirc valve.If its collapsing, it needs renewing to ensure the crankcase pressures are within spec.

I doubt this alone could lead to that oil consumption,but anythings possible
