just been told by the DVLA that if i want to keep my original plate on retention i will have to pay £105!!! and said if i take off my plate when selling they will re allocate another "J-reg" plate to the car but this will not match my service history... obviously i still have the actual plates to show for but i realise the new v5 wil have the new number plate on but this will make the last 15years look invalid right??? i really dont want this to happen on ms G40 thats only on 41k with full service history!?!?!?!

WHATTTT!!!! Why would you have to keep the original on retention?

when you remove your private plate OFF, either onto another car or onto retention (for £25 a yr) the ORIGINAL plate that preceeded it goes ON.

i assume theres a database at the DVLA with a column for ORIGINAL REGISTERED PLATE (to track the history of the car) and another column for cherished plates linked to it.

I had a saxo ages ago which had a private plate on it but it said on the log book its original plate and i was told by the DVLA that its just £80 to put the original plate back onto the car.

I had the same issues...however learnt that it's generally normal...

Thing is unless the original reg is unique then you're pretty much sure of getting the original back onto the car.

I had my private reg on my golf for 3 years...when it came to selling the golf the original reg was still free so they put that back on. if it's not free you'll get a dif plate..but it's all cool

Don't bother paying em at all...worth the minute risk of not getting the same reg back tbh!

Forgot to add...DVLA will give you correct documentation through out that will prove the cars histroy is legit mate. Just keep old MOT's and stuff together...as long as there are no discrepencies then only a foolish person will say no to buying the car in future.

and DVLA try to get you your old one back anyway...

Its £80 for putting on another car + £25 retention certificate admin fee. The regional DVLA office will stamp any MOT, log, service books etc with the new allocated registrastion so its all legit.

Why are you putting your original registration on retention? Do you just want to put another private plate on or something? If thats the case, it highly unlikely the DVLA will sell your old registration number because they won't advertise it. Therefore no need to retain the original imho, you'd get the original back for free anyway if ever retaining the private one.

They should infact put the old orginal number plate back on, they just call it a "new" one.

I had the same issue with the woman on the phone..She kept saying "your new plates on the car"...I'm in the middle of putting my plates on retention, forked out £105..

You can apply for a refund on part of the £105 if you don't keep the plate off the car for the whole year.

Like i said...DON'T PUT THE ORIGINAL REG ON RETENTION! CHANCES OF IT SELLING ARE VERY SMALL!
