Hi Guys, can anyone tell me if you need a press to replace them. and if its an easy DIY job?.

Its my daughters car with less that 40K miles, seemed to have a bearing noise at the time we bought it (dec 06), but I knocked the fella down on the price & told my daughter to get it checked out on the next service.

Anyway, she got a quote today for £250 just to do the front hub bearings, without the service, sounds like the guys taking the piss to me.

So, looks like its down to poor ol dad to fix, with a little help on here maybe.

You will need to press the old ones out and the new ones in.

Best bet take the hub to a garage and get them to do it and then re fit the hub your self

£250!?! now thats a rip off...

£25 for each bearing.... so £200 for labour???...ill do it for that much if you like

£80 labour at the most...or if you remove the hubs and just have a garage swap the bearings with a press then jus a tenner i reckon

You can do them without a press, I've done loads. You just need a strong vise securely mounted to a strong bench, a big f**king hammer and a suitably sized drift (I use an old very large socket). And don't be scared of giving it a proper whack.

You'll also need a way of getting the inner bearing race off the hub as it usually sticks on. You can use a grinder to grind a flat onto it and then hammer and chisel to crack it. Or these days, I use a bearing puller which makes it a much easier job if you have one.
