I've just fitted coilovers to my mk5 gti and I've got a metallic clunking noise on the front (both sides) when i turn my steering wheel. It sounds like a spring being compressed and then released suddenly.

The only thing i have noticed is that the top part of the strut that sticks through into the engine bay is swaying from side to side when you turn the steering wheel. Not sure if thats anything to worry about?

Could it be that the top nut just needs re-tightening or could it be something else?

Bearings need replacing??, had this with mine (Mk4 on 80/80 springs and shocks), as soon as the bearings where replaced, smiles all round. I only noticed mine were loose when driving, could hear it to, as soon as the bearings were replaced the problem went away.

You have put the top mounts back on the coilovers haven't you?

pretty sure the top mounts that stick out the engine bay need to be tightened more. Try and get them done with an air gun..should fix it. Got exactly the same prob.

Its common for MK5s to clunk when they're really low...

are you on FK highsports?

i have a mk5, and the suspension also clunks (amongst other things). on mine its coming from the passenger rear. still not found out what it is tho. annoys me alot. my car is dropped 60/40 on some dodgy german ebay suspension (not the ones that people recommended me to get, so i guess its my fault).

I had a look today and it looks like the ARB is rubbing on the bit of chassis (or whatever it is) that sticks out just above the bar.

I'm going to have a do at either grinding or hammering the bit of chassis back to give it some clearance and see what that does. I'll also pop to a garage and get them to nip the top nut up again.

They are PhilJ coilovers btw.
