tyre & wheel choice - mk3

Featured Replies

thinking of changing wheels from steelies to a set of 14s which came with the heap-o-shit that i brought a while ago. My cars been lowered 80mm all round so i was wondering will they fit and if they do, what tyres could i run? Will try and take a look at them tomorrow to determine width etc but any ideas welcome. Wheels look like minilites if that helps?

I know the wheels,i saw some chrome plated ones on a lowered and V8 engined yellow MK1 Mazda MX5.

Depending on the offset, you'll be okay on..

165x55x14 - dont know where to get these from, but JonG40 runs them.

175x50x14 might clear - budget ones can be fitted for a bully each.

175x55x14 - standard on Kia Picanto, and just 0.6% over standard gearing, but i cant find them anywhere - doubt they'll be cheap at Kia.

185x55x14 - more common, and can be fitted from £40,but you'd have to have perfect offset and would probably still catch on the front.

Let us know what you find

nice one mate. I get nice lil discounts on tyres through the place which does our lorry tyres so i could get them to order some in for me.

Are any of those fitments 'stretched' ? Not too sure i should be doing that with the roads round here being bloody terrible!

how wide are the alloys. I've got 165/55 fitted on 6.5j wide bbs ra's, but they are very slightly stretched (so much so i actually measured the rim and found them to be 7 j wide but they have a stamp on them saying 6.5!) 165s are perfect for wheels up to 6j wide and they will not rub either, well unless you space the wheels out loads. they handle fine too (I run them on a g40 and I've not visited a hedge yet!) they have a very similar wall hieght to 194/45s so look pretty low profile. you can get them from mytyres.co.uk and i guess most suppliers can get them too they cost about 30 quid each too

did you meansure the wheel width from the outer edges, wheel width is measured from inside the lip on the wheel.

looked on wheels earlier. looks as tho they are 6.5 J x 14. No clue whatsoever what the ET is tho!

I'll have a look on mytyres and see what i can find!

£35.10 from mytyres. Might give these a go as don't want to go back to having rubbing tyres

I'd use 195/40s. But they aint cheap...

How about 155/55? (at least nankang makes 'em). I have them on 6" wheel, moderate strech, on 6,5" would look even better. Pics here. It's low, but still won't affect too badly your speedo (mine's 10% off).
