when he removes the plate to put it on another car or on a retention certificate the DVLA will issue an appropriate reg number for the car you just bought ,it won't be the reg that came off it unless its being held by him on retention or is still not in use you may be lucky , but if your cars "r" reg then you will get a "r" reg plate and not a Q .ideal time to buy a cheap £250 plate and let him pay for the transfer

Chances are the original reg will be put back on unless it's something a bit different (spells someones name orsomething).

do u no how long the paper work will take??

cheers

I put my private reg on my car on the 18th...got the paper work through 4 days ago...less than a week!

Remember though...new reg comes out (57 reg) on sept 1st so DVLA will be busy...2-3 weeks probs!

^^Wow that was quick...I'm still waiting on mine but I did mine on the 21st August, they said it should take up to 7 days because of bank holiday. I called up DVLA to ask about the Log book, that should take 2-4 weeks even thought the new reg's are coming out. They most probably will give you back the old plate that was on the car previously.

@rupy - have you recieved the log book yet?

The V5...yes...if you mean the service histroy book...i've not given em it.

  • 2 weeks later...

You can have a cherished plate transferred in ONE day if you go to a local DVLA office. However, If he is just having the plate put on retention it will take upwards of 6 weeks, it took me nearly 8weeks before i let my car go because my private plate is worth 10grand and i wasn't gonna let the car go while it was still on!!
