I'm looking to buy another mk1 but this time a cab. the only major problem is that it has very rotten sills on one side.

presumably this is an mot failure but i just wondered how much i might be looking at to get it welded up.

the car is very cheap so its worth spending abit of money on.

i had a similar prob with one of my mk3 polos, one side was really bad. fortunately i've got a mate who works in a garage so i gave him a hand and gave him £50 for his trouble. its not as difficult to do as you might think. it helps to be able to do it on a set of ramps like at a garage, but its not essential. make sure all dead metal is cut out. vws are fairly strong, though on a cabby it might be worth doing a little bit at a time as the sills have to take all of the load due to a lack of a roof! whilst you are doing it make sure you remove any loose underseal cos there will deffo be rot underneath it(if your gonna do it you might as well do it properly)

if the sill is bad it wil fail the mot, it depends on how visble the rot is. my polo passed its mot the week before i found the rot (the underseal had hidden it, and i only spotted it after pulling up the carpet to run some speaker wire!)the mot man isnt allowed to prod sills etc with screwdriver, so if its hidden its unlikely to be found. bad really cos i bet theres a whole lot of cars that should fail but dont!
