mk3 gt camshaft in a mk4 engine again

Featured Replies

I want to have another go at putting my gt camshaft in my mk4, after last time i need some info. Does anyone on here actually have one working? I think it was steve86c who gave me some pointers before, but all info is welcome, cheers!

bump?

just fitted one to my mk4 1.0 8v, but I'm pretty sure its the same for all the them. i turned the camshaft pulley over until its lined up with the orignal timing mark, it should be firing on n.o 1 piston so both lobes on the camshaft are pointing up. then remove the original camshaft, replace it with the GT cam with the lobes in the same position, put the pulley back on, slackened the tensioner then lined up the bottom pulley with its timing mark (should be correct position already), slide the belt back on and tighten the tensioner making sure the guides line up. To make sure all is a ok turn the engine over on the bottom pulley.

with the bottom pulley on the timing marks (no 1 piston firing) it should be somewhere around here

thanks to me paps and jarno for helping me

Does it give much extra ooomph? Thinking of doing it to my girlfriends mk4 1.4 8v.

the improvement is noticable, makes it sound more raunchy too :unibrow:

ned could you explain more about this please? was it an easy thing to do? sounds like good be a pretty interesting mod!

thought i better post this here as well

ill try go through everything i did but its off the top of my head,

use a jack and bit of wood under the sump to support the engine(no wood means pain in the ass when the jack goes through the sump), remove the engine mount. jack the engine up to get to all the nuts and clips off the timing belt cover. lower the engine on the jack.

release the bolt on the alternator which allows you to tension the belt(sort of like a slider), lever off the engine to push the alternator down to slip the serpentine belt off. Remove the 4 allen bolts holding the serpentine belt pulley on the bottom of the engine, you can then see the crankshaft pulley.

Use a multi-sided spanner to turn the engine over clockwise until the arrow on the bottom crankshaft pulley is pointed upwards towards a marker and the mark on one of the teeth on the camshaft pulley is lined up with its marker (you can see in the pic). This is when n.o 1 piston (piston closest to the timing belt) is firing, both its valves are closed and the lobes on the camshaft are pointing upwards.

Release the timing belt tensioner and slide the belt off the camshaft pulley. jam a f off breaker bar or similer tool in the camshaft pulley and release the nut, taking off the pulley.

take the rocker off then all the 'shells' (not sure if its the right word) off to get the old camshaft out. Put the gt camshaft in a similar position to the original with both lobes pointing upwards, put all the shells back on and the camshaft pulley back on. Make sure your lower crankshaft pulley is still lined up. slip the belt back on the camshaft pulley making sure its sitting on all the pulleys correctly.

Use a allen key to get the tensioner in the correct position, lined up with its crazy markings and do up the nut. Turn over the engine clockwise on the bottom pulley to make sure the valves and pistons dont make sweet love. You can then use a long screw driver through the sparkplug hole on n.o 1 piston to get the valves opening at the best times. Then just throw everything back together, the ignition timing needs playing with as well.

I hope I've included everything I think the duration of the gt camshaft is 219 and the 6n's is 18?

Cheers for this been looking for this thread for ages.

To clarify did you lock the bottom pulley some how like it states in the haynes manual?

SImon

na, as long as you turn it over by hand once its all on before starting it it should be alrite.

that was on an engine without power steering, with power steering the mount has to be loosened abit to get the bottom pulley covers off

righty righty.

iv herd of this done plenty of times. its safe. reliable. and does add more BHP and torque, whcich is definetly noticeable after 2500 rpm.

now. the only thing i am unsire about iss::

everyone who i have seen that has done it. has used the 1.2/1.3 GT camshaft, and placed it in a 1.0 8v mk4.

i wonderd. i have a 1.4 mk4. and would the 1.2/1.3 GT camshaft have the same efrffect as it is out of a lower enginee sized car. would i need one out of a 1.4 GT or even a 1.6GT ... orrr are they all the same size??
