Hi guys i ahve posted this in one of phillj's sticky's but i thought i would put it here also.

I have on my car at the moment 185/60/14 tyres with stock suspension and when i go over bumps in the road the tyres hit the lip of the arch and they are getting shredded by it. I will be lowering my car 60/40 and i also have a set of new 185/50/14's. So to stop my new tyres getting destroyed with the lower sus i need to do something about my arches, because i have plastic arch trims i was thinking that if i just grind the inside of the lip away the trims would cover up any roughness/flimsyness. or i could hammer the inside of the lip back on itself so there isnt any sharp edges. I dont realy want to have to fork out to get them rolled mainly because I'm not very rich atm and also being a greese monkey i like the work done on my car to be my own (I'm a bit funny like that).

So what do you guys think to my ideas bad/good? Any input is welcome

hammers are a no-no in my books, and grinding's kinda ok i know a few lads that have done it and its worked but you have to watch you dont get the paint to hot and burning it otherwise youl be needing a spray job to.

or you could make your own arch rolling tool theres a thread about it somewhere on here

am taking my car to wide wheels in huddersfield and its only 30 quid an arch there!

It depends on what you're prepared to undertake yourself. If you are feeling brave, a heat gun and rubber mallet can be used to gently fold the arch lips back on themselves without the paint cracking. Granted the job will not be as professional as paying someone to roll each arch for you, but the results will be very similar, and it is after all on an area of the car barely seen.

I wouldn't advice grinding the lips off the rear arches as that is where the rear quarter outer skin is attached to the rear quarter inner skin. Removing the lips (and subsequently the welds holding the skins together) may result in your car becoming like a concertina in the event of a rear end shunt.

Ok thanks guys. ill probably go with the heat gun and mallet since we have a bit of a paint shop at the garage i work at.

go with the heat gun and mallet, it works well so long as you only go a mm or so at a time. you should only have to do the tops of the arch, best way to work it out it to put the balloon tyres on, take for a little spin so it rubs slightly, you will be able to see where it rubs then and so long as you dont go too mad it wont take the paint off (even if it does just put a dab of hammerite on!) if you want a fast pikey method go find a hump back bridge go over it really fast on the stock supsension, the car will bottom out and roll the arches for you!it will crack the paint though!
