Well...

I will put this first, I'm quite knowledged with cars and G40s but I'm out of ideas, so please educated guesses...

Right G40 was running fine, i did have a water leak but it was the waterhousing, that has been fixed and my water levels have been fine car running fine...

I then realised i was running a standard chip, what a cock, so i borrowed rae's superchip, which was set for a car with toothies and that was about it for mods, so i thought i will try it on mine as mine has toothies but a few more mods...

So i fitted it, and took it out, it ran fine no signs of anything, then did 10 mile, and noticed it was pinking...

So i fettled the timing so it wasnt pinking...

ran fine, this was monday afternoon...

END OF CHAPTER ONE

i then come to go out monday evening, pull ou tof drive clouds of smoke, it was a bit dark but it was white smoke, did the usual testing, I'm sure it was water, there was a slight smell of petrol too...

now i checked water level, FINE

checked oil, FINE

checked cap, FINE

all the usual stuff checked and it was fine, no signs of anytihng fucked

so i got pissed and put a toilet at a bus stop

BUT ANYWAY

i then come out today, fire it up, no real smoking, so i think its fixed, then an hour later come out, take out and smoke, lots of it, white smoke, zorst wet round exit...

again, no signs of water geting in, so whats going on?

it is white smoke, all signs that water is getting in, but where from????

any ideas...

I wonder if the modded map put to much pressure to the old headgasket?

the map changes the fuelling only, i dont see how the chip can make the headgasket go. its not like a turbo car where the map can also up the boost.

i was worried about similar symptoms with mine, water level fine, oil level fine, yet, loads of white smoke and water pout of exhaust. i put it down to being stood in the end. if you dont use it often then the exhaust just fills with condensation

well how can it be head gasket if the water level stays same, and oil, and no cream on cap...

check the plugs, if you have a clean one then headgasket has probably gone on that cylinder

another way to check for headgasket failure is to see how quickly the cooling system builds up pressure, if you start the engine from cold and fast idle it for a few mins (say 2,250 rpm) it shouldnt really build up any, best way to monitor it is with a pressure tester.

When i bought my polo i took the water cap off after just moving it a few yards and the cap literally blew off wth the pressure when i un-did it. Headcasket had gone.

Overfueling causes white smoke aswell.

Mine was chucking out white smoke intermittantly when the lambda probe got the arse.

Is their any way you can check the emissions?

overfueling usually causes black smoke, oil is blue, water is white

yeah unburnt fuel usually causes black smoke.

How long have you ran it with the smoking Dan? Could just be condensation in the exhaust, if you run it for a while and it just stops then I'd say that was it. Also worth checking how quickly the water pipes start to feel hard when it's running. Like Ade said, if they get hard really quickly then it's not looking good. It only takes a small amount of water in the exhaust to create quite a lot of smoke so maybe if you run it for a while and it still smokes you'll start to notice the water level has gone down slightly.

well i took it out and tested, it took about 20min ot get up to temperature, zorst was still quite cool

the smoke is constant, maybe a bit less at the end

checked the water, no signs of leaking, still same level

compression tested all 4 cylinders, all fine, giving 10psi is it?

I'm thinking it is fuel related, there is a smell of fuel, but zorst is very wet on pipe with fuel...

i fired it up and moved the car, then popped the plugs out to compression test, and 1 & 4 were very wet...

i think its injectors, missfiring and not spraying petrol right so it doesnt spark, will explain the pinking too?

Is it possible that your exhaust is collecting water from somewhere, like condensation? I don't see how it can be HG if your water levels haven't dropped.

well I'm royally out of ideas, I'm gunna drain coolant 2mrw, its running water in so I'm gunna drop it, and put coolant in, and then i will be able to smell it, as rae said....

I thought you said it was the injectors me confused now? why do you need to drop the coolent out? you can buy a test kit that tests the coolent to see if the head is going? like a preg test

where the hell else can you get water from, fooking strange that matey, not got contaminated (sp) fuel?

I'm trying to think of ideas how i can have compression, the water has to come form the coolant, it has to...

so maybe it is leaking via a crack or something in the exit, collecting the water and taking it direct to the zorst...

so there wont be no obvious signs of power loss etc,

would not need much water at all for the steam but I'd thought by now the levels should have started to have dropped at least?

I heard somewhere that if the system is leaking you can detect a gas within the water. Should be able to get that test kit locally.

yeah a "sniffer" test. Just a thing you dip into the header tank and it changes colour if it detects exhaust gases in there. Maybe a local garage would just do it for you if you ask nicely?

Do the coolant pipes feel hard after a few seconds of starting the car?
