I have a 3 door slope back 1994 registered polo and need a petrol tank, when I enquired they said it could be a Mark2/2f/3 because of the year 1994 change. It is a single point fuel/3 door sloping back, 1.0ltr,square headlights. How do I tell which it is.

Mk3 or a 2f.. depends on how you look at it. Just tell them its the early shape of 1994.

If it looks like the two in the avatars above then it is a Mk2F.

A mk3 to VW and most motor parts stores is a 6N.

Yeah... As above.. it depends on which way you look at it!

There is a cult/underground grouping system,popular in clubpolo,and thats all very well when used as such.

But if you're ordering parts from the motor trade,international sites,volkswagen etc,then you use the correct grouping system - or you're likely to be given the wrong parts..

MK2 - 1982-1990

MK2F - 1990-1994

MK3 - 1994-1999

The MK2 has round headlights,and had the biggest single engine design change of the three cars halfway through its life with a complete re-design of the cylinder head,but changed very little otherwise.

The MK2F is a facelifted MK2 - meaning its based on the same car,but with some changes - most notable being the interior/exterior trim had a re-style,and it had a new fuel system to compliment catalytic converters.

The MK3 is a much taller,curvier car,and was an 'all-new' model,inheriting little more than the engine/gearbox design.
