Ok, I'm ready to start tuning up my 1.6 8v 6n, currently have a full exhaust system coming thanks to philj, some suspension sitting in my garage ready to go on (will pick up some lowering caps for these as well)

planning to go for a big brake upgrade later in the year, and now I'd like to up the power, I'm on a modified policy so I'm hoping to drag my 75bhp kicking and screaming up to 100bhp as cheaply as possible :) and as much of the work done by me as possible!

so things i'd like to do :

induction kit (cheap as possible, i find the prices of these things appalling)

cams (have seen 1.6 8v cams cheap on a uk site but lost the damn thing, would like to know how easy it is to fit after market cams..)

larger throttle body (would any tb's of a VAG vehicle fit with small amounts of myther?)

the cams and throttle body are what I'm most curious about as they seem to give best performance gain.

I'm not expecting miracles either, but if i can pick up a few decent bits for as little as possible I'll be happy.

i would be intrested to see how you get on trying to get this engine up to about 100bhp.

maybe you should make your own induction kit with a performance filter and some pipe?

You should be able to swap a cam in an evening with a haynes manual... Is there much available for the 1.6?

Oh and I'd consider GT/Digifant multi-point injection. The inlet manifold will need bastardising...

They have a very restrictive head so porting is a must

not much 8v specific no..

like i said i had found a cam... just where it is I'm not sure!

heads very tight eh? have to sort that out then...

was under the impression i had multipoint injection... but its worth looking into!

wondering if a gti tb would work?

they do run multi point injection (some early ones only had spi though) one thing to consider with headwork is that if you free it up too much you may reduce the amount of torque these engines are renowned for. cams would work well as would a larger throttle body, but I've no idea which/if any would fit. it might also be worth ditching the plastic inlet manifold as they look rather restrictive! do not buy a ready made induction kit for this engine cos they are shit, you would be far better off making your own using suitable pipe/hose and a universal filter. I would recommend locating the filter down near the headlamp, then make suitable pipework back to it. long tract induction kits such as this can also improved torque which is a nice little bonus! finally get a poloace chip, they work very well on the 1.6 8v and they are fairly cheap to buy, they will also help with fueling if you do go as far as getting head work and cams. i dont think 100 bhp is going to be obtained as cheaply as you may hope, but if you can get up to that kind of figure and maintain the std torque figures it will go like stink!

restrictive head.... pish posh.....

if anything the ports are too big on those heads...

i also would like to see this, i have a 1.6 GLX MPI and would like to know roughly what kind of amounts of money would be needed to get some decent power out of her!

i absolutely love the deep revs of the engine, such a SHWEET sound, especially with the induction kit and Votex backbox!

thats after tuning. they are 75bhp std

not found much else, been researching big brakes.

would anybody have any suggestions on throttlebodies?

a single larger TB is an option, like say of a 1.8/g60 or similar if it will mate up easily anyone got any idea on that?

failing that.. bike carbs are cheap.... how easy to mate them up wiring/fuel wise? and how much roughly for a manifold to suit?

main thing i have turned up is.. "basic tuning" costs a bomb :) but its very interesting!
