Hi guys,

The top mounts on the front suspension of my mk3 have worn and I'm not sure on what parts need replacing. Is it just a rubber bush or will there be various other components which will need replacing?

You can get new mounts from GSF, they come as one unit.

You might need this tool: VW Strut Tool

To undo the strut top assembly easily and without risk.

yeah it one unit, but be aware the gsf replacement ones i think are longer, i dont know why this is, or maybe the originals i had fitted had just shrunk with age...

but i replaced them on my car and it raised the front by a good few mm...

I wont be using GSF since i will be able to get the parts cheaper using one of the parts accounts at the garage i work at. I just wanted to make sure that when i do order the parts i get everything i need. I could take a side apart and have a look but i dont have the time atm.

GSF top mounts are wank.

G40 top mounts are slightly taller than normal polo ones. you cant actually buy normal polo ones any more, only G40 ones, which is why dans car raised a few mm probably

Oh shit. I have just replaced the shock and top-mount on one side of my mk3. Think Mr MOT will notice? The new one sits a little bit lower than the other side. I thought the old one was just squashed with age.

could be. my polo originally had the short ones, i swapped them out for G40 items. some normal mk3 will have G40 top mounts as there was a dealer recall on them.

regarding MOT, aslong as there is no play, they will be fine

How tight do you to make them?

I had a cunning arrangement withan allen key and a flattened off socket I was turning with a spanner and some scaffolding tube. I had the jack handle over the allen key and gave em a big shove in opposite directions!

All that happened was the allen slot on top of the shocky crumbled. I thought I'd read something like 250 NM in Haynes BOL? Think that's too much?

250nm sounds far to much for the size of bolt lol.

So ordering the G40 ones will be the best way to go? By how much will they raise it?

like 5mm or something, not alot anyway and they should settle down a bit
