hi i've not long been on this web site but i was wondering if someone could help me with something?

i have a 1998 polo and the steering wheel makes a scraping noise when its turning. i did manage to fix it for a couple of weeks but it just happened again and now i can't fix it again.

can any one help?

Really need to be starting at the beginning,here. You say scraping,which basically means that part of the rotating steering assembly is fouling something fixed. The only way to cure it is to trace the parts that are rubbing,and stop them doing so.

You say you fixed it temporarily,so you already have more of a clue than we do. But the sound can give you a clue as to the materials involved - if its a solid grinding,its likely to be the metal shaft. But if its a hollow scraping,it sounds more like plastic trim.

Classic two-stage case of fault finding followed by rectification,really.

Had this its crud down inside the coloumn give it a blast with some WD and clean it all out.

plastic on mine still rubs a little but not enough to notice.

i think i'll just replace it with a new better steering wheel!

If not, then it could be the airbag slip ring. It doesn't affect the operation of the airbag, but the noise is just annoying.
