how do u remove the streeing wheel

so i can fit a new racing streeing wheel :-D

erm... i posted a fairly in depth explanation somewhere have a search for me in this section and search for steering wheel you might find it

take the cover off the wheel, being careful if it has an airbag (take positive off battery first!!!!)

then unscrew the nut in the middle 2turns - NO MORE!! or u will break your nose when u pull it off.

then PULL! pull harder if it doesnt pop off.

then remove nut and take off the steering wheel.

fit new steering wheel boss

fit steering wheel

do nut up

voila

so to 'jack, but how long do you leave the battery disconnected before the capacitors in the airbag module are empty? 10 mins? 2 hours?

no you disconnect the battery on the positive so u dont accidentaly earth it to set it off.

the capacitors would vary from car to car so its hard to say - but there should be no risk of it going off without it being "set off" or else it would randomly go bang when driving down the road!

i think that is a kind of MYTH which stops people tampering with something that they shudnt - also officially you are meant to have a licence to remove an airbag!

you should be fine after a nice 30min tea break!

ah right, i was told that the sensors on the car worked on a voltage drop, ie when they are impacted, a voltage drop is induced which sends a signal to the module which controls it all. May be wrong like, and probably changes from car to car. But yeah thinking about it, that makes sense for the airbag itself, the grounding thing i mean.

Dodgy business these airbags lol i dont fancy one taking me by surprise

Oh yeah, and do you know of any nice looking after market steering wheels that have an airbag fitted? i want something that looks good but still offers protection!

aftermarket - not really, subaru's have nice airbag equipped wheels but the connectors might not be the same.

voltage drop maybe so but howmany cars do you know of which have been smacked into parked up where the airbags have gone off????????????

it dont happen like that - the cars got to be on regardless!

yeah, true it does make sense and its only heavy collisions where most go off aint it.

Oh yeah and i ebay'd it, looking for airbag steering wheels, they can be got, but they aint cheap!! lol

well i got a bagless wheel so do u just pop the horn button off or somthing

You do get a voltage drop when you close the door,having just got in the car.

Maybe you're getting confused with alarms that have voltage sensors. Or your source was.

Airbags have knock sensors - and they dont work at all,if the car isnt travelling above a certain speed.

i was going to say they have knock sensors fitted behind the dash on the bulkhead normally - but without being 100% i wasnt going to say it (as per forum rules)
